Our daughter is 3 years old. We are really struggling to find right medication for our daughter. She has autism spectrum also Cochlear Implant. Her autism really locked her communication. Please help us and write us how we find right medication for her and education? Thank you!

For education, I strongly recommend you contact your local Childfind office and get her evaluated so she can attend a FREE autism preschool in your area. There are often over 30 hours a week and the programs can be quite good. What county and state do you live in? We can help you get the phone number if needed.

I assume you are working with a doctor for the meds? What is the doctor's specialty? Have you gone to a developmental pediatrician?

What is the medication needed for?

Also as far as communication/education goes - what are you relying on? Just auditory/verbal communication or are you using ASL as well? Are you getting any services from MSD or Kendall or elsewhere? Early intervention? What has her pediatrician said?

I know MSD (Maryland School for the Deaf) in Frederick has opened up their deaf with multiple disabilities program (it used to only be at their Columbia campus). You can look into Kendall in DC as well. Both have great deaf ed. programs and also offer spoken English services, CI services, etc.

Tell us where you live -- county and state -- so we can give you better recommendations. There's no medicine for autism but there are therapies and programs.

pp here. I should add...

Both of those schools are free for residents, or if you live out of the area and your county agrees to send the child there and pay for it it would be free for you. Mantua Elementary School in VA (Fairfax County) also has a pretty good program for deaf students, including deaf with special needs.

My concern with a regular autism preschool is if they'd have the ability to address the unique needs of a child who is deaf as well as autistic.

Again, would help to know where you are and what services you have already sought out.
