San Francisco Bans Happy Meals

Anonymous
Well, they've banned nuclear weapons, too, and practically speaking, happy meals are probably more dangerous....

They are not banning the junk food, only the use of toys to seduce the kids into wanting it. If the parents wish to feed them junk, they are still free to do so.

Ugh. Why don't they just come out and say they don't think people are worthy of making their own decisions? How patronizing can you possibly be?
Anonymous
That's cute; 15:44 answered 16:08 24 minutes early. They are allowing parents to make the decision without the pressure of kids whining for Mickey D's toys.

Except that I'm fully capable of standing up to my child's whining. So I guess they're making patronizing decisions for the pushover parents who can't handle it themselves.

Except I'm fully capable of buying plastic crap without some corporate executive telling me what I have to get for my child's entertainment. Cuts both ways, you know.

Totally agree, 16:30. But the plastic crap thing isn't why they're banning it, and frankly I'm confident the plastic crap isn't driving up the price of the Happy Meal. I guess it's all theoretical to me, since I don't think my dd would eat a happy meal if I gave her one (just 'cause she's a super picky eater). I just chafe at government limiting my options, and I'm a democrat!

These crazy lefties want to live in a society where the government chooses what is good for you and what isn't. The fact that there are actually people on here defending this is pretty scary. How the fuck can you defend the government trying to tell you what you can and can't eat. I'm a true classical liberal and this Democrat party is not one one I want to be part of.

This is nanny state-ism at its worst. It is shocking to me that anyone thinks this is ok.

OK - I don't think most Americans are capable of making intelligent decisions.

Well, that may go too far. How's this:

Californians have demonstrated time and time again, with their (mis)use of the ballot initiative, that they need to be protected from themselves.

This is known as Democracy: the duly elected representatives of the people of SF made the decision. Don't like it? If you live there, vote 'em out. If not, bugger off.

The government is not limiting your options, nor, as the poster below you suggests, telling you what you can or cannot eat. What it is an initiative designed to limit predatory marketing to children. And if McDonald's didn't believe in the value of the crappy happy meals toys in luring children in, they wouldn't have expended energy or money to fight this, as it is NOT THE FOOD being banned.

Next will be cereal, then the cute packages of ice cream, then those really enticing cookie packages. When will it stop? How can people defend this idiocy is beyond me. But then again, this is the place that loves Nancy Pelosi.

Are you really on board with allowing elected representatives to pass any law they want? I'm not.
