Mirena Weight Gain ?????

Anonymous
After reading some general health message boards, I am now suspicious that my Mirena IUD has contributed to my 8 lb. weight gain. I just can't shake it. Has anyone else had weight gain while using a Mirena? I exercise fairly heavily and am really upset. I got the Mirena to control bleeding and if I get rid of it I will need surgery to control the heavy periods.

i have had it for about 5 months now, and have not experienced any weight gain. actually, i think if anything i've lost a little bit. it has been amazing with my periods - very light compared to my previous, before my 2nd kid, where i had very, very heavy periods. it's proven to be a big SAVIOR for me.

I am really hoping it doesn't cause weight gain. I was on Yaz and regained all the weight I just lost from baby #2. I tried Mirena because it has less hormones than the pill. I have had it about 6 weeks now and haven't lost weight but I haven't gained weight either. Oh, and I didn't have a period this month either.

I immediately lost 10 lbs. when I had mine removed. It was all water and bloating. Ugh.

Wow, how long did you have the Mirena?

I've had my Mirena for only three weeks now but I've been bleeding ever since. I know they say you may spot for several months after it's put in, but this is period-like bleeding (not super heavy, but enough to use 2-3 tampons a day). How long did this last for you guys?

I just had Mirena put in on Mon - I only spotted for a day after the insertion. All the cramps/low back pain that I had on the day of went away.

I sure hope I don't gain any weight. That wouldn't be good.

Just a year. That was all I could take. It is impossible to know how your own body will react and i truly believe everyone has a different experience. I have friends on Mirena who have gained no weight at all. I'm now on NuvaRing which is obviously still hormones, but they don't affect me the same way. I have not gained the weight back. For some weird reason I just blew up on Mirena.

I gained 5 lbs, was a bit moody and developed cystic acne. The spotting ended after two weeks, I think, but I had random bad cramping for a long while (learned to carry Ibuprofen with me everywhere). It mostly all settled down by the 6th month, except the 5 lb weight gain and the acne. I'm off to the derm. next week. Despite all of that I'm still glad to have the Mirena. Getting my period triggered some depression for me (related to fertility issues) and I'm so glad to be free of that.

Wow. OP here. I also suspect water weight because my weight will fluctuate daily more than it did pre-Mirena. I got it to control heavy bleeding and prevent ablation surgery. Maybe I am so old now (48) that the heavy bleeding has stopped. Thanks for the input.

I've had mine for two years and am considering getting it taken out. Weird discharge, no sex drive, slow weight gain (3 lbs) and really bad PMS. I have heard that pre-pre menopause can cause the same symptoms, which is why I hesitate having it removed. BTW, I spotted for almost six months in the beginning.

Does the bloating stop? I have had the Mirena for 6 weeks and hate it so far.
