In Maryland, you can't take your 13 year old kid to the voting booth. Does anyone know why?

I know it's state law, but I'm curious about the rationale behind this restriction. Many states have it, so it's not unique to Maryland. TIA.

Because by age 13 they are deemed old enough to be alone by themselves for a few minutes in the chair seating area.

I think after age 12 you are considered old enough to babysit or be by yourself at home for longer than a short period.

We also have a secret ballot in this country and by age 13, they can announce to everyone how you voted. I don't want my children to know because sometimes I change my mind even though I may normally vote for one party.

Well, OK, but you don't HAVE to take any children in to see you vote if you don't want to. Of any age. Just leave them home or let them sit on the chairs.

But you MAY bring them in until age 12. Also, I read that you may bring in one adult if you need assistance -- for example someone to translate, or help you read. That adult must be of your own choosing, and not your employer or a union official or anything like that.

But I guess you can't bring in your child, over age 12?

He isn't an adult at 13 but you can bring him in with you when he is 18.
