About a week ago I started noticing in bed at night and early in the morning that my ankles were feeling achey and I was doing a lot of twisting them around to get relief (and it felt good). Last night I had the same thing with the ankles but I was also really stiff when I got out of bed this morning...even had trouble getting up easily after going to the bathroom but definitely loosened as I started moving around more. I'm good shape, thin and had not done any exercise since Sat. morning - so it was not caused by a rigorous workout yesterday or something like that. And then mid-morning I also noticed that not only was the ache in my ankles but very mildly in other parts of my body as well (legs and some upper body)...almost like I might be getting the flu but not the flu. (I feel fine otherwise.) It got better during the day but the aches returned tonight. FWIW, I have been dealing with a locked jaw/displaced TMJ disc since August and in general have been plagued with very tight muscles and stress that have been causing me a lot of issues in the past couple of years.
Anyway, just curious if anyone else has experience with these type of symptoms. It's mild overall, but definitely notable. |
| Could it be arthritis (brought on by the colder weather)? |
| Go see your GP. They could run some labs to check for an inflammatory process and go from there. You may need to see a rheumatologist for a thorough evaluation. Sorry to hear about the TMJ. I went through this about 10 years ago, and it was extremely stressful. Things will work out though with the TMJ, but it was a long haul for me--surgery on both sides. Doing fine in that area now, and you will too. |

I had similar issues that started on one side of my jaw. It turned out to be Lyme disease. It got much worse quickly and actually did some damage to the jaw (trigeminal) nerve. It has taken several months to see improvement, and everything but the jaw is feeling much better now.
Any headaches or weird rashes? |

I was going to suggest lyme as well -esp the jaw issues, but don't forget, there's also stress and exhaustion, and you mention being under stress. I've had a couple of times that my joints have gotten so stiff I could barely walk - it's been when I haven't gotten enough sleep for several nights in a row, and I am very stressed. This has happened in two of our last moves (we've moved four times in five years). Getting a few nights of good sleep really eased things. It just shows what havoc stress and exhaustion can wreak on the body.
On the other hand, my feet, more so than my ankles, are very stiff almost daily when I wake up. It takes a good few minutes of walking around to get them loosened. I work out daily and am 42, and I figure it just has to do with exercise/working them and getting older. But this is only after a lot of rest and only in my feet - I don't get this during the day. I'd get tested for Lyme and also examine whether you're getting an appropriate amount of sleep for you (I am fine on 7 or even 6.5 hrs but when it drops to less than 6 a night, my body really suffers). Good luck, OP. |
| OP here. Thanks for the responses. Lyme Disease...hmmm... No on the rashes but yes on the headaches but I know that has been related to the jaw pain. And I do appreciate the sympathy there - it is indeed stressful and sucks, particularly the lack of proven treatments and fact that nothing is covered by insurance. I don't feel like my sleep is awful in terms of total amount but has definitely decreased related to various issues...jaw mostly recently but even now these aches are affecting my sleep a bit. I am actually due for a visit with my GP again soon so will certainly check in with her. Thank you. |

Good luck on finding the answer, OP. I didn't think I could have Lyme either early on in the ordeal. Not everyone gets the rash and it can be hard to notice. It was only when I remembered a pink mark that was on my ankle for a few hours did the picture come together. Had I not removed my socks and looked while it was there, I'd probably still be searching for a diagnosis. If you have other joint or muscle pain, general brain fogginess and mood changes, you should ask to be tested for Lyme. The frustrating thing is that the testing is not very accurate. It can cause damage to your nervous system if left untreated, so it is important to catch it early. The doctor said I may never regain full feeling in my face. It can affect motor nerves, too.
I was tested for everything under the sun, even MS. It was me, not my doctor, who mentioned it could be Lyme. The right treatment made all the difference. |

I once drove a friend to the oral surgeon who treated my jaw problems. The dr. suggested she get evaluated for Lyme disease, the tests were positive, and she was hospitalized for related meningitis (I think) very shortly afterward. Jaw pain/ stiffness was my friend's most prominent symptom for some time.

| 14:34 again... I would also want to rule out arthritis issues and remember undergoing a blood test for rheumatism during my TMD travails. |

fOP again. I'm pretty sure that I've had no such rash (and I looked up a picture online) but I guess can't be totally positive. Very interesting though about the friend who had jaw issues and Lyme Disease. Yikes. My jaw locked in mid-August when I yawned early one morning. It had popped for years but never displaced until now. I've had a particularly rough year...second child (though she's been the least stressful thing), extended unemployment not by choice, and misc. health issues popping up related to muscles and joints and tightness and nerves. I recently started seeing a therapist for the first time ever and was diagnosed with moderate depression.
I did make a special visit to my GP in early Sept. to ask the general question of, "WTH is going on with me...I'm 38 and my body feels like it's going down the tubes?" She did a blood test for fibromyalgia and it came back negative. She referred on to see a sports medicine doc but I've been so consumed recently with the jaw stuff (PT twice a week, etc.) that I haven't made the appt. yet, but I think I will now. Plus I'm supposed to have my annual physical with my GP this Friday, actually. I was planning to reschedule because of a conflict but now I might make it work as something doesn't feel right. My lower back is particularly stiff today and my legs, arms, wrist and ankles are aching worse than yesterday and all day. I'm supposed to go to a yoga class tonight and debating whether I'm up for it as my body feels very fatigued. I'm still not ruling out though that it could just be a mild virus of some sort...with two little ones, who knows. But I am slightly concerned about it given all else that has been going on this year. I do appreciate all the input! |
FYI there is no bloodtest for fibromyalgia- it is pretty much a diagnosis of exclusion. |
That confuses me because she definitely did a blood test and told me it was specifically to test for that. ? |
