suggest a series of books for my 1st grader

He just devoured the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Is there another series we should be looking at for him?

Wow. That is pretty advanced for a 1st grader, isn't it? Mine is just learning her letters.

I think these are roughly the same level--some are in a series, but others stand alone--and probably OK for a 1st grader:

Aldo Applesauce and others by Hurwitz
A Bear Called Paddington and others by Bond
Charlotte's Web (White)
The Cricket in Times Square (Selden)
Tales of My Father's Dragon (Gannett)
How to Eat Fried Worms (Rockwell)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and others by Dahl
The Toothpaste Millionaire (Merrill)
Henry Huggins series (Cleary)
Ralph S. Mouse series (Cleary)
The Borrowers (Norton)
Farmer Boy (Wilder)
The Enormous Egg (Butterworth)

A to Z mysteries
Judy Moody (very funny, even if main character is a girl. My first grade DD loves them, my son wouldn't touch them, so YMMV)
Ready Freddy (easier read than diary of a wimpy kid, but amusing)
Captain Underpants (yuck to me, but my son still loves them)
Ricky Ricotta Robot (same author as Captain Underpants, but a bit classier)
Horrible Harry and Song Lee (again, easier, but entertaining)
Prince of Underwhere (and other Underwhere series, all a mix of graphic novels and chapters, like Wimpy Kid. Again, potty humor, but funny)
Bad Kitty books (not the picture books, the chapter books)
Alvin Ho? not sure of reading level of this one

26 fairmount avenue: i read these to my son because i liked them so much (tommie paola)

My second grader likes the Capital Mystery series and the Weird School series. For girls-- Ivy and Bean is awesome (boys too but they'd be less interested as the two main characters are girls).

She is delayed if she is just learning her letters in 1st grade. What does her teacher say?
