Infertility Support and Discussion
| Has anyone on this board never been pregnant? I mean I know we get a lot of women who have had chemical pregnancies and miscarriages (which I can only imagine is so very painful) but is there anyone out there who has unexplained infertility who has been trying for over a year and never even gotten a positive pregnancy test? And do you ever just get really really frustrated or mad that they can't even explain why you can't get pregnant? I do not mean to offend those who have suffered miscarriage because I know it is a pain unto itself, I just need to know if there are others out there who have been told "hey you are fine, but you just can't get pregnant?" |
| My husband and I had unexplained infertility which was really frustrating because we couldn't decide what to do. If the RE had said you have this, so you have to do this, it would have been easier to deal with, but we tried on our own a lot longer than we should have. The RE recommended IVF but we were reluctant to go that route mainly because of my fear of needles and long term risks of fertility drugs. Finally we did get our BFP, but it took IVF with ICSI to achieve it, and we still don't know for sure what was the issue, but we are hoping that our successful pregnancy has cured it and we won't need to do IVF again for number two. However, we won't try on our own for too long since that really took it's toll on us, and looking at my DD makes all the pain and anguish over IF worth it. GL to you |

we were unexplained and never ever saw a second line until our fourth IVF cycle (after 3 IUIs)...nothing ever stuck before that and we were very doubtful that it would ever happen...definitely very frustrating to not make it to that next "step"...
have you seen an RE yet? are you planning to get any assistance? |

We never got a positive test of any sort without IVF and tried to get pregnant for a total of 5 years. Tried for 2.5 years with number #1 and did IVF and it worked beautifully. Tried again naturally for over 2 years for number 2 and then did IVF again. Again, it worked.
All our testing was perfectly normal, and I was 29-34 during this time. So we had normal eggs, normal sperm and despite roughly 60 cycles of perfectly timed intercourse (not including an additional 2 years of "not trying but not preventing" the sperm never once met the egg. I used to wish for a miscarriage because somehow even that was better than NOTHING EVER. Certainly my logic was flawed but the frustration of never having anything happen but not having a diagnosis (and being young) was really agonizing. |
Yes we have seen an RE. |

Yes--I've been there and it's incredibly frustrating. We finally found out we had an implantation disorder. If you haven't had it already, ask for the beta-3 integrin biopsy. Beta-3 integrin is a protein that's supposed to be in your uterus at the time of implantation. If it isn't there, even perfect embryos won't be able to implant. The treatment is 2-3 months of Lupron Depot, which generally will restore the beta-3 for a cycle or two but since the cure is only temporary, it pretty much has to be done in conjunction with IVF.
I'd also recommend getting tested for NK cells, which can prevent implantation as well. Be aware that both of these issues are controversial, so you might get some resistance from your doctor (not enough research to support--blah, blah, blah). I say, if you've tried everything else and haven't solved the problem, what the heck do you have to lose?? FYI, here's a link with some more info about the Beta-3 Integrin test: http://www.etegritytest.com/index.php By the way, I also agree with the posters above. You might just need IVF. |

We have unexplained IF, too. Never ever saw a positive pregnancy test. We are going through our second cycle of IVF. first one they did ICSI & everything looked great. They didn't stick.
I am going to ask our doc about the beta-3 integrin. after 5 years of unprotected sex (not to mention every ex-boyfriend has super sperm that knocked up their wives - some 5+ kids.) there's gotta be something wrong w/ my cooch. |
| I also had unexplained IF and never had a positive pregnancy test until my 4th ivf cycle. Got pregnant that cycle and it stuck. Good luck and def get a second or third opinion of you need it. |

Question for poster 11:37...what clinic/RE did you use to get your beta-3 integrin test and who prescribed your Lupron Depot injections. Were those hard to obtain? Did you do this all locally?
After 2 failed NCIVFs, 3 failed IUIs, 1 failed IVF/ICSI and 1 failed FET...with NO positive beta test ever...I'm desperate. We have unexplained IF as well. |
| Poster 19:55...how old were you when your 4th IVF cycle worked? Did you always have "good" cycles prior to that? Can you share your winning IVF protocol and how many eggs you retrieved/transfered etc? Any reason why you think the 4th cycle was successful? Thank you so much! |
|
19:55 here I switched to a different protocol (epp) and switched from sg to Cornell. About 14 eggs were retrieved 9 fertilized w icsi. I transferred 2 8celled embryos on day 3 and now have twins.
The entire FTC process took about 3years total. I was 33 when I got pregnant. |

This is 11:37. We used CFA--Dr. Abbasi to do the testing but she wasn't familiar with it at all. I had to do all the legwork and I was able to convince her to do the endometrial biopsy. When the results came in, she said she didn't know what they meant. I had to go to the E-tegrity website for guidance. I ending up having to go out of town to find a doctor who would prescribe the Lupron Depot. Dr. Tortoriello at SIRM-NYC is the only doctor I've been able to find who would treat both my immune issues and my Beta-3 Integrin problem. FYI, CCRM (in Colorado) also treats Beta-3 Integrin issues but doesn't believe in the immune stuff.
