sedation dentistry

Anonymous
Has anyone used sedation dentistry. I have a lot of trouble getting numb - I don't mind dental shots and they give me about 4 times what they give most people, but I can still feel it. I think I have a big procedure in the offing - I just don't think I can face it conscious. Anyone have any recommendations, suggestions, etc.

I tried laughing gas (forget the actual name) a couple of times. Not because I can't get numb with the shots, but because I am a wimp when it comes to dental work. I loved it! You are still awake but the time flies by and it has amnesiac qualities so you forget about the work and discomfort. I don't know how it would work if you were not fully numb though. As I recall it added about $75 to the bill.

Another option, I recently had major work done and the dentist offered Valium. I didn't take it because I am nursing and would have had to pump and dump but you might ask your dentist about that. Good luck!

My dentist routinely gives laughing gas (nitrous oxide?) when I have a cavity filled or when I had crown put in. I don't believe he charges extra for it. I find it quite relaxing. I was curious about sedation dentistry but honesty cannot afford the cost.

Laughing gas worked for me too when I had a couple of wisdoms that broke off during removal and more serious digging was needed. I felt the work going on but just did not care because I was too relaxed.

In general sedation doesn't work for me. Any type of medication, including OTC ones, make me drowsy easily. Recovering from anesthesia (local, but put me right to sleep) after very minor surgery a few years was horrible - I was in a sluggish funk for a couple of days. I wouldn't do sedation for a dental procedure if I didn't have to.

Insurance usually won't cover sedation for dental procedures but it could in your case so definitely ask.

I really prefer the laughing gas because once it wears off I can drive myself home. My dental insurance doesn't cover it so I pay $100 extra for it.
