Driving around the neighborhoods just doesn't give a person a sense for what the community is really like and whether the parents are generally sending their kids to and happy with the local public schools. If you're happy with your child's school and your community, please give it a shout out and tell me why you would recommend it. We're looking at elementary schools right now, but obviously interested in the whole pyramid down the line if we were to invest in a house. |
I am very interested in the same question, but more concerned about middle and high schools, specifically in close-in Montgomery County - Chevy Chase or Bethesda. |
Shout out for Garrett Park -- wonderful close-knit community with Halloween and Fourth of July parades, close to public transportation, swimming pool. A new elementary school is being built, so right now in a holding school and overcrowded - but should get better once new school is built. Feeds into Tilden Middle School (which is also getting a new school) and Walter Johnson.

We just learned that MCPS is recommending a study for the construction of a new elemenary school for the RM cluster to relieve over-crowding (on the site of the former Hungerford Park Elem.). If this gets approved and funded, then there would be a boundry study to determine which neighborhoods would go to the new school. So if you are looking at homes in the Rockville/Potomac area, the school boundries may be changing in the near future. |
Near future should be clarified as likely 5 years from now. |
To the op, most who are happy with their neighborhood/ community will not advertise for fear of overcrowding |
PP, Unless the person is planning to build a new home, they probably will only replace an exisiting family...I doubt many people want to keep their neighborhood a secret... |
Not necessarily. Our neighborhood (and our street in particular) is filled with original owners from the 1960's living in large 4 and 5 bedroom homes. These are older couples in their 80's whose children are grown and haven't been in the school system for many, many years. While my neighbors are very sweet, and I would miss them, if they decide to downsize, I would welcome a new family with young children as they could be potential friends for our kids. Unfortunately, I couldn't recommend our neighborhood without reservation because I'm less than thrilled with our local elementary school. |
My DD is too young for elementary school, but my BIL and SIL live in University Park and love it! They also love the local elementary school. |
The question is pretty broad - can you advise what in which general area(s), or at least county, you are looking to move? |
Not the OP here, but looking in McLean and Bethesda and would like the same info. |
We love Greenwood in Brookeville, MD. |
Carderock or Bannockburn. Whitman pyramid, but just as importantly, these neighborhoods are known for a real sense of community. |
Hillmead neighborhood in Bethesda, (Bradley Hills ES and Whitman district). Small community with playground, sidewalks, lots of little kids, neighborhood parades and events, own listserv, etc. |
The problem with many of the close-in Bethesda schools (full disclosure--my children attend one) like Bradley Hills ES is that they are almost all totally overpopulated right now. Find out how many "relocatable classrooms" (trailers) there are right now....many of these Bethesda students will spend at least one or two years outside in a trailer during the elementary years. |
