Dealing with the frist report card from GT

Anonymous
My DD is used to getting mostly O's with a few G's. Next week, we should get the first GT report card. I know she is doing very well in some areas (science where I am told that she "gets it" from the teacher before a presentation I did for the class on mondat) but might be struggling a bit in math (she refuses my help their). I was warned at the GT orientation that often, the first tern grades are down, as the children adjust to the more advanced learning. Has parents, how do you deal with it?

(this is not about test scores...the children are in and will be in through the 8th grade).

I think we're going to have the same issue.

PP: you mean on the report card? The funny thing with my dd is she is not really into comparisons. And her school (Louise Archer) actively discourages that. So when she got into the AAP program, she said "someone thinks I am smart?'

Well I always did, but I am biased.

I have 2 kids - both in AAP - 6th and 3rd. One way to approach it (and I think it's valid one from what I've experienced and my friends with kids in GE have too) is that: third grade in FCPS is a turning point for all kids. This is the year when they kick it up a notch across the board. It's the first year for SOLS, first year for more serious projects - it takes some getting used to. Also, I find my older DC takes a quarter to get back into the groove of studying, reading test questions carefully, etc. We discuss these aspects before the report cards even come out.

We've noticed that even before 3rd grade, it seemed that first quarter grades could be lower - it almost seemed as if they did that to give the kids something to aspire to later in the year.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I have to laugh, as parents of children who are gifted, you are horrible with grammar and spelling.
