Pedicure

I would love to get one. Any recommendations for a place familiar with pregnant women? Or does it not matter?

Depends how far along you are. Early on, the fumes may make you nauseous. Or the water temp may throw you off. MUCH later, like 30-something weeks, my doctor told me not to have massaging of the area above my feet/ankles but below my knees, because it apparently can stimulate labor. I think that's it. As for where, it depends where you live.

I would go to a high-end spa rather than a cheap pedicure place, just because of the fumes.

I had a cheap-o one during my first pregnancy, and the acrylic fumes were awful. I worried for months that I had hurt my baby by getting a pedicure (she's fine, BTW, so it probably isn't a real issue unless you're working there)

Just don't let them massage your ankles, as there is a rumor that can bring on premature labor. NOt sure if it's true or not; I'm sure it doesn't help the women who are over-due!

Thanks - I live in the District but could travel to close-in VA or MD.

What about Elizabeth Arden? Not sure that they specialize in pregnancy pedicures (whatever that means) but it is a very nice salon and well-ventilated.

I would just go to a place that you know to be reliably clean & well-ventilated. I used to go regularly to the nail place across from Eastern Mkt & went there for a pedi during my 1st trimester b/c I trusted them as far as being sanitary, etc. But the fumes were horrible, and I'd never even noticed before being preg. So now I go to places that I know tend to be less busy, etc so that the fumes won't be an issue. Anyplace upscale like Red Door, Aveda, etc should be fine.

I went to Elizabeth Arden in Pentagon Row at 33 weeks. I did the Express Pedicure so basically they didn't do all the massaging and lotion rubbing. It was great. The lady there told me they do lots of pregnant ladies' toes. Only $37.

I go to Nusta spa b/c its close to my work. I highly recommend them, but they are expensive. $50 for a pedicure.

Queen Nails on 21st between Mass. Ave and P. Looks a bit dingy but is the best pedicure I've had.
