Aspen - How long to submit final grades?

Anonymous
We are new to DCPS so I'm hoping for some insight. My HS kid has some grades that are either incorrect in Aspen (as in the numbers in the "details" area don't match the letter grade calculated for the term) and 2 classes where teachers haven't updated grades from both Terms 3 and 4. My kid has talked to the teachers and they say they are in the process of updating things but now that we are on the last day of school, what recourse do we have if things don't in fact get done? In each of these cases the year end grade is impacted.

Thanks!

Teachers have a records day on Monday (the 22nd) for entering in final grades, so you should see things updated by then. Some teachers will do it before then, but Monday is the day actually allotted for that activity.

Oh good, thats helpful. Thanks!

Does anyone know - if Aspen is showing a "last posted grade" for term 4 and a "final grade" for the year also posted - is that a done deal? Or could things still change before 6/22?

If they posted a grade for term 4 it is likely done. Some teachers do go back in and make some edits at times, but typically (especially for Q4) once its posted they are out of there.

I work at a middle school, but we had to post our grades today to get checked out for the summer. My son is a DCPS high schooler and every teacher posted grades this week with the last two being today.

The final grade for the year will populate tonight after 10 or 11pm to be added to their transcript if it was posted today.

to the original poster, if the grade really isn't updated and should be. The recourse you have is writing to the principal with documentation/proof that something is not right. I would follow up with the teacher one last time though to try. The grades likely won't be locked from being able to repost until sometime next week.

+1. Both my seventh grader and my freshman have all of their numbers in. Grateful to the teachers for moving so quickly.

Now freshman awaits their first ever announcement of ...class rank. (gulp)
Does this post in Aspen or only Naviance?

DCPS has class rankings? My kid goes to a DCPS HS and doesn’t have class rankings that I know.

Walls doesn’t. So far as I know, all other DCPS high schools have class rank printed on the transcript.

It will be on the transcript and in Naviance.

You won't see the new transcript in "documents" on ASPEN until the first week in August right after ASPEN flips for the new school year.

Walls doesn't print a rank on your transcript? Wonder why they (uniquely) opt out.

Yes. Walls is unusual in that there is a cohort of about 15 kids per year that complete their last two years of high school via the GW program - meaning they take classes at GW their last two years instead of classes at Walls (with the exception of some Walls requirements like internship and senior project etc). My understanding is the kids taking classes at GW all got a point bump for every class taken at GW on their transcript so there was no way for "regular" kids at Walls to compete GPA-wise, no matter how many APs you take. Comparing apples to oranges I guess. FWIW I can see on Naviance there are sky high weighted GPAs that my "regular" Walls kid who is taking 4 APs junior and senior year plus calc 3 could not mathematically attain, even though kid has straight As. So I guess there was something to the parents' complaint (and the resulting elimination of ranking via GPA at Walls).

I went to a very large/very competitive public high school outside Chicago and at least when I was in high school they also did not have class rank, the closest we got was finding out which 10% band we were in. I always attributed it to the amount of stress kids and parents put on themselves, combined with how difficult it is to differentiate number one is in a class of 1000 where so many kids take lots of APs etc. IMO class rank only goes so far/means so much bc it is comparing apples to oranges with regards to size of graduating class, types/rigor of courses offered etc.

What you wrote is true. But the parents who got rid of ranking truly did throw a fit. Particularly one parent who threw fits about everything involving their child. Truly the squeaky wheel (to the extreme).
