youth hostel or neighborhood for a quick Barcelona trip

My 18 year old will be in Barcelona for a few days by herself. Any recommendations for either a hostel to stay in or a centrally located neighborhood where she should find lodging?

The El Born neighborhood is a good central location and cheaper than the Gothic Quarter or Eixample. In general, watch out for pickpockets in the city.
