| My kid wants to use a drawing app on the iPad while listening to audio books. I generally don’t let her use the iPad except for on airplanes…but now that she’s into audio books, the iPad is out a bit more. She’s almost 10 and dyslexic. Thoughts on how to allow audio books without ending up having an iPad around? I can’t just play it from my phone onto a Sonos speaker because sometimes she wants to pause or rewind. |
| You can lock it into the audiobook app with guided access, but what's wrong with using the drawing app while listening to a book? |

The IPad is a very useful tool for her. Try to think of it as that instead of a treat that needs to be limited. As a pp indicated, you can set up access to certain things while she is using it and block others.
When my DC was in 3rd grade, I asked him if he followed along as I read to him or did something different. He said, “ It may not look like I am listening, but I have to listen differently so that it goes into my long term memory because my short term is blank.” So, if she needs a fidget, or a doodle or something to do while she listens, remember it helps her focus on the listening. |
| My neurotypical kids loved audiobooks. One of them built Legos while he listened, the other liked to draw (with paper and markers). |
| Mine plays Minecraft. 🤭 |
They also craft or draw while watching tv. Or wear headphones to listen to music while doing Legos. Mostly they need two activities to feel calm. |

Friendship bracelets
Crochet Beading bracelets and backpack charms Folding laundry Actually has ended up selling some of the crafts and gets custom orders from kids who see the backpack charms and crochet animals! |
| When my DS was that age, he jumped on the trampoline. |
|
Mine do chores - fold laundry, mow lawn, pull weeds, wash dishes, etc.
its an incentive. |
It's odd that you think reading is something that needs to be earned. |
Meaning they like to combine these activities or the audiobooks are the rewards for doing them? |
| Why don't you get a pair of wireless bluetooth headphones and let them wander around? Also you can get an olddd ipod and load some books on there too. Hook them together (wireless headphones or wired) |
| If you're in MoCo. You can borrow the playaways from MoCo Public Libray MCPL. It's one book loaded onto a MP3 type of player. THey're really grea!!!!! I think they also come with corded headphones. |
I was assuming they meant the kids listen while doing these chores. I don't know if I'd ever fold laundry without the incentive to watch tv or listen to a podcast or audiobook or call a friend. It makes the chore actually pleasurable. |
