Renewing an adult uS passport

My passport will expire January, 2028. I do not want to wait til the last minute. In fact, I would like the new one in my hands July, 2027 because many destinations require that six months remain on a passport.

I want to avoid the frenzy in May and June when people renew passports for summer trips. ( I avoid summer travel…empty nest stage.)

So what did you do to renew that was safe and swift? I don’t mind paying extra. And I think I could release my passport in March or April, 2027.

We renewed our kids passports last April and it was fairly quick. If you do it next spring you should be fine for July.

We renewed our passports online in April and May. Took a week from application to receipt. You are eligible to renew online as soon as you are less than a year to expiration. You can renew by mail anytime.

We did mine and DS' mid Feb and had them about 4 weeks later. I did mine online.

Check the timeframe needed to renew and the process with which you can do it. My spouse has alot of international travel this summer and wanted the new passport. However, since it didn't expire for over a year the only way he could renew was to make an inperson appointment. He decide against doing that as the available appointment times didn't work with his travel schedule. So he's waiting until its a year out and will do it online instead.

PP Here: I should have added the passport website has a step-by-step checklist to determine if you can renew online vs in person. When I renewed my passport last year - online - I had it back in 2 weeks - but that was in the spring. I don't know what the summer timeframe might be like.

Did online renewal June 2, received it June 12, this year.

You are overthinking and creating stories of mad rushes to renew in certain months. We renewed ours May 26 and received it back June 13th.

Oh and we did in person at the post office. Did regular processing (not expedited).

There were major delays in spring/summer 2023 because a lot of people were traveling internationally again and hadn't renewed their passports. By the end of 2023 the backlog was over and it hasn't been an issue since.
