Recommendations for UPF shirts?

Anonymous
I have developed a sun sensitivity (boo) and I get itchy for days if I overdo it in the sun, so I'm looking for the lightest weight UPF 50 shirts. Anyone have suggestions?

The HiHo shirts were the most comfortable ones I found but it was a couple years ago so maybe there are other good options now

I have one from FreeFly that I like. Very lightweight but not see through.

If you're willing to go down to, for example, UPF 30ish, there are some merino wool shirts from a variety of places that will work (but may have different issues than synthetics). For everyday wear I much prefer merino wool for comfort, and the UPF is a bonus. I just bought a UPF hoodie from Ridge Merino to replace a similar one that lasted many years.

I still have some synthetic UPF shirts though. For something like cycling I prefer them to merino wool. Problem with synthetics is that over time the can get a smelly funk that doesn't wash out and often have a weird clammy texture. I just bought a Mountain Hardwear UPF hoodie to replace some similar Kühl hoodies that I had had for many years. I like the Mountain Hardwear one better so far. The Kühl ones have elastic at the wrists that was uncomfortable and caused actually painful marks on my arms if I ever tried to wear the sleeves pushed up (until a few years in when the elastic started to break down).

I used to have some UPF shirts from a couple of the big travel places (Coolibar, travel-something (I think)), but, damn, some of that stuff looks so dowdy/frumpy. I'm a guy in my 50s and don't care a lot about fashion, but still, some of that travel UPF wear is just awful looking. If it looks frumpy in pictures, assume it will be even worse in person.

I have never gone the route of the super-lightweight UPF stuff, so I can't advise there, but I remember finding the most reasonable-looking stuff marketed for fishing/boating (not travel).

Go to Cabellas or Dicks fishing clothing section.

REI Sahara shade hoodies.

Lands End, zip up hoodie style.

Yes, you will feel unimaginably old.

Uniqlo has good ones as well, but not in the zip up style with a hood, which gives great neck and ear protection.

I like TYR for a dashboard. And Solbari has nice options.

Idk if these are enough coverage for you but San soleil quarter zips are my favorite.
