Who is N?ick Minock

Who is by Nick Minock? He is saying FCPS wants to get rid of Christmas .in the school calender. Why is he trying to do?..
New: Fairfax County Public Schools is asking parents if they’re ok with eliminating Christmas in the school calendar, and other religious and cultural observances like Diwali, Eid al-Fitr, and Rosh Hashanah.

He's a reporter with an enormous grudge against L-C-P-S and F-C-P-S. Loves nothing more than to report on any hint of negative news from those systems.

Tldr: he's in it for the clicks

He did not say that FCPS wants to get rid of Christmas. He did say that a FCPS survey is asking whether or not religious holidays should be on calendar. Christmas was included in the question. A screenshot of the survey is included.

I checked it on FCPS website and, while the survey is not posted, it did say that a survey about the calendar had been sent to employees.

And, PP may think that Minock is a troublemaker, but he is about the only reporter who covers FCPS decisions.

He's someone who should be looking into the decisions the School Board and Reid have been making about the Skyview Boundary Study. I bet he could figure out who pulled strings to get boundary maps changed in real time if he dug around a little.

He is a hack reporter with a grudge against FCPS who works for local channel 7 which is owned by right wing Sinclair Broadcasting. He never reports independent news, he always broadcasts biased pieces. Sinclair Broadcasting and “reporters” like Minock are a scourge on journalism.

Thanks for the information. What has he reported that is not true?

FCPS included Christmas in their religious holiday questions hoping that parents would not drop religious holidays to the peast important reason for days off. They want to keep all the religious holidays that they added in the last bunch of years and are hoping to scare families into listing religious holidays high on the list of things to keep.

But Christmas is a federal holiday and occurs during winter break. No one believes that they are going to move winter break.

When you have religious holidays that depend on variable lunar developments, it is kind of hard to plan.

i still remember when they wanted to cancel AP tests on one day because of a religious holiday. Problem was that the kids would have to take it on the make up day and some kids have to take a test on a make up day because two tests might be given at the same time on the originally scheduled day.

Christmas comes during Winter Break. Spring break does not need to revolve around Easter which happens to fall on a Sunday. I grew up in a very Christian southern state. We never had break around Easter. We never had Good Friday off either.

I don't have the answer, but, 3 to 4 days off at odd times for one religion make things very complicated.

Christmas is not a specific FCPS school holiday, so that part of the question is meaningless.

But in general, all the religious holidays should be removed.

Christmas is a federal holiday (one of the original federal holidays)

Christmas should have been listed with the other federal holidays, but FCPS wanted to skew the survey results so they separated Christmas from the federal holidays and moved it to the religious holidays.

FCPS knows Christmas is a federal holiday.

FCPS knows that more than 80-90% of the students celebrate Christmas, either religiously or secularly, and likely more than 95% of teachers and school staff celebrate Christmas, so there would be no adults in the building and barely any students in the building if FCPS were to hold school on Christmas Eve and Christmas just to make a point.

It was petty and dishonest of FCPS to remove Christmas from the Federal holiday list, just to try to put their thumbs on the survey results.

If FCPS created an honest survey, Christmas would have been on the federal holiday list and Ash Wednesday & the two Orthodox holidays would have been listed with the religious holidays, as well as decoupling Easter from spring break.

FCPS knows A) Christmas is a federal holiday and B) such a significant majority of FCPS families, teachers, administrators and staff celebrate Christmas that schools cannot function on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Knowing these truths, FCPS was being completely dishonest and manipulative with their survey wording removing Christmas from federal holidays.

The only reasons to do this is to influence the survey results, and to create discord in minority religious groups if other religious holidays are removed and Christmas stays because it must stay due to logistics.

Nick Minok is an investigative reporter who focuses on the stupidity and waste of FCPS. Yes, he appears to be right wing, but your question should be why don't any of the many left wing reporters ever care to deep dive into the waste and stupidity of FCPS, holding them to account as well.

Universally, parents, admin and teachers in fcps agree that this year's pandering calendar was a disaster.

With very few exceptions, anyone with a basic grasp of American civics and culture knows that FCPS removing Christmas from the federal holliday list was completely dishonest, had dishonorable ulterior motives to manipulate survey results, will not be possible or practical due to the sheer numbers of families and staff that celebrate Christmas, and will cause much more hurt in the long run for minority groups if the other religious holidays are removed and Christmas stays.

Christmas has to stay on the calendar. FCPS knows that it cannot be removed. The schools will be empty that week, there will be no teachers to teach, and the district will lose a huge chunk of funding

Removing Christmas from the federal holiday list was dishonest, petty, and mean. It was especially mean to those minority students who don't realize that Christmas is a federal holiday, what a federal holiday means, and how schools are staffed and funded. They are only going to see it as a slight to them, because they don't understand the facts around Christmas as a federal holiday, and school funding formulas. Shame on FCPS.

FCPS should get called out for their dishonesty. More local reporters than Nick Minoc should be taking FCPS to task for this dishonest and misleading survey.

I don’t mind that they listed Christmas with religious holidays, because even if they did stop “observing” Christmas (they will not)… it would still be an excused absence for religious observation. Which is how we should deal with every other religious holiday as well.

It’s an empty threat, but a foolish one because it hyped up the right wing war on Christmas folks.

The problem is that soooo many families and teachers celebrate Christmas that hopding school that day means FCPS would only have 4 or 5 teachers in the buildings that week, and maybe 5% of the diehard students whose parents want to make a point.

FCPS would lose their funding for that entire week Christmas falls on, and would not have enough warm bodies to hold functioning school.
