| Today I got an email stating my DC was found eligible in subject-specfic AAP services in math. My child is in 1st grade. I know that the process for AAP starts when children are in 2nd grade. Does accepting subject specific AAP services next fall help with applying in 2nd grade AAP at all? Or is it a completely separate process? I am new to this whole AAP world and would like some guidance. |
| We received a similar letter for our 1st grader. I was wondering if math was the only subject-specific AAP service offered in 2nd grade. Do they also offer it for language arts / reading? did anyone get a reading / language arts subject-specific letter for a 1st grader? |
| It’s available for all subjects of strength. It will be indicated on your child’s application during the 2nd grade process if they are still in it at 2nd grade. Every year they are evaluated. |
|
my first grader was identified for language arts and math for next year
not sure if it “helps” for full time but it definitely puts them on the AARTs radar. will also depend on HOPE scores and ability testing |
| Are there a lot of kids who get identified for Specific subject AAP? I wanna ask my childs friends parents but don't know how to ask without sounding rude or pretentious. Is it better that I don't ask? |
Don't ask. The only way I knew other kids had received the letter was a parent asking all the other parents at an end of the year party in first grade. It was awkward. |
| I think it's just LA and math at that age. They will be on the AART and teachers' radar for full time AAP but this has no real bearing on that process, which is handled outside of the base school by a FCPS-wide central committee. |
|
It's all very mysterious to me. My 1st grader who scored a 96 percentile on the MAP and can do multiplication, simple division, fractions, and negative numbers didn't get picked up for any subject-specific AAP. He scores perfectly on school work too for math. The AART said he didn't demonstrate a need for differentiated instruction.
Meanwhile my third grader whose grades are lower than the 1st grader gets subject-specific language arts. Doesn't make any sense to me. |
| Not every school does this. My DD is 99% math in 1st grade and never gotten anything. In the past with my older child, they said they just give the AART lessons to the whole class rather than make this designation. I feel like it might be a disadvantage for AAP application but maybe not if nobody at the school has the designation, as they claim. |
| Has anyone from Poplar Tree Elementary School received the letter notifying them about subject-specific AAP selection? |
| No info for us either so far. |
Poplar Tree doesn't do subject specific in the younger grades K-2, only starting in grade 3 if not admitted to full time AAP. Even then I heard they have to test into Advanced Math each unit, placement is not even guaranteed for the full year. |
What school are you at? There are a couple of base schools where so many kids do enrichment in math and 96th percentile might not be in the top group. |
| What percentile is needed at competitive base schools? |
Thank you for this info |
