Middle School language grades count towards high school GPA: is that just the final grade or do the quarterly grades count as well?
My child took French 1 in 7th, ending the year with a B-. He struggled early - not really getting into the rhythm until the end of the year - so his quarterly grades were mostly C's. As we consider whether to keep or expunge the grade, I'm not sure which grade(s) actually transfer. |
| Was it French 1 or French 1A? I did not know any FCPS schools offered French 1 in 7th. Ours only offers the full class in 8th or you can take 1A in 7th and 1B in 8th. (And then I believe only 1B counts but it could be an average of both.) |

I have never heard of 1a and 1b!
Only normal classes at our FCPS MS. Only the final grade shows on the transcript. |
Most schools have done away with 1A/1B. |
| Yes they count toward the HS GPA. You can expunge the grade and he can retake the class. |
I would expunge that grade and retake in 8th. Lesson learned. Some kids aren’t ready to put the time and effort into a foreign language in 7th that will go on their transcript. |

To answer your question, only the overall final grade goes on the transcript. So if his final mark is a B-, that’s what would be on the HS transcript. A lot of 7th graders struggle with level 1, as they aren’t quite ready for a high course yet and the expectations that come with that. There is nothing wrong with expunging and retaking the course in 8th grade, if he isn’t happy with the B- going on the transcript and/or doesn’t feel like he has mastery of the content learned in level 1. |
