Uchicago inflated student outcome numbers

So, Princeton's number is 86%, somehow Uchicago reports 98%. Uchicago's number is as preposterous as their yield rate or US news ranking!

"Chief among these are master’s programs, such as 4+1 programs offered by the University, which have drawn criticism for their high costs and poor student outcomes.
“I think a lot of the people who do the 4+1 do it because they feel like they have to be doing something the year after they graduate,” Levinsky said.
Even if students do not ultimately find employment after completing a 4+1 program, they are still counted as having secured post-college plans by Career Advancement."

Guess what, most (all?) schools that brag about XX% of their students are employed within 6 months of graduation, consider entering graduate school as being employed. The schools don't wait for the students to finish their Master's before including them in the stats. There is nothing asinine or dishonest about what UChicago does. The post is a nothingburger.

UChicago troll is becoming increasingly desperate. Refreshing the college newspaper website for troll ideas....

A student run newspaper? Let’s not pretend this is serious journalism.

Are UChicago students somehow subpar in the research/writing department? Do you find the school’s PR department more reliable? What gives…

Go read The Harvard Crimson and look at students' complaints about Harvard's administrative decisions, especially on political issues and its defense of President Claudine Gay. Students complain about many things at all schools. UChicago is no different. The difference is, some posters like to use these complaints to attack a certain school and give others a pass.

I was wondering when the next UChicago attack was going to begin…(and what the grievance would be).

Not a good look.

What's the source of your bitterness and ire?

Is this the alma mater of an ex? The dream school that didn't take you off of the waitlist in 1992? The college of your frenemy's DC?

Chicago has been touting these wild employment numbers for a few years. I remember we did their summer open house in 2024 and the the dean of admissions told the crowd of 500 parents that "99% of our 2024 grads are employed or in grad school." I quoted this on DCUM and someone said that accounting for her child's circle of friends alone, more than 1% of the graduating class were not employed or headed to grad school.

They do seem to like to exaggerate. It's probably frustrating as a grad to be told that you're employed when in fact, you are not employed.

The figure seems not realistic at all in this economy. From the student newspaper:

When fourth-year Nicole Reed first heard the 98 percent figure, it struck her as “preposterous.” She recalled how “everyone laughed” when the statistic was cited at the undergraduate English department’s end-of-year celebration.

Other fourth-years weren’t so amused. Katia Sergeeva, a double major in neuroscience and data science without plans for the coming year, described the figure as “demoralizing.” “That was a frustrating number to hear,” she said. “It makes me feel worse about where I’m at.”

Reed, who also does not have firm post-grad plans, looked at it differently. “I guess the number doesn’t make me feel bad because I just think it’s obviously wrong,” she said.

I remember seeing this number in one of their endless mailers, it’s impressive. Prospective students wouldn’t know they have 4+1 planned for them.

4+1 is pretty much an extra year of hanging out at college and justifying unemployment.

Some fields do get a lot easier with a masters though. DD did an internship her Junior year, summer after senior year, and summer after her MPP, and scored an amazing job because she had 3 experiences in public policy and a masters.
