DC is in high school, 3 years below grade level, severe case of school refusal due to anxiety and embarrassment of learning disability. Refuses self contained class which led to school refusal but unable to keep up with regular classes.
ISO a synchronized virtual school/program for a student with learning disabilities and anxiety. |
| Home and Hospital may be a good approach if you are in MCPS. |
| If you can pay, Fusion is 1:1, so can teach at exactly the student's level. |
| Would the Lab School be an option? Not virtual, but all the kids have dyslexia/dysgraphia. |
| Pacific Prep may be a good option- https://www.pacificpreparatory.org/ |
Hospitalization is not an option because DC is not suicidal. We’ve already been down that road. Virtual school would be the option for home. |

Home and hospital (or IIS) is the name for mcps's online school program for kids who need to learn from home (or a hospital) for a documented reason. My son did it due to anxiety. The lessons are simple and streamlined, and you could be there to provide academic support as needed. There is also another online mcps program which can be permanent.

Its not a real education. |
This is a very basic program. Not great if you want a strong education. Its the absolute minimum. MCPS took away the virtual school. |
| Look at private accredited virtual schools in your state. Then hire a tutor, if needed, to help your kid through the material. This will be the most flexible option and a fraction of the price of Fusion. Fusion would be good but is extremely expensive. We looked into it about 4 years ago and it was around 10k per class back then. |
| ^ here is the search we used for VA when we were looking. Type virtual in the search bar to find the virtual options. I’m sure there are similar for DC and MD. https://vcpe.org/Verify-School-Accreditation |
Weird, it's only $5-6000 per class now. Not cheap, but not $10k either. https://www.fusionacademy.com/campuses/washington-dc/tuition/ |
You’re right that it’s the absolute minimum. But the kid is years behind and you have to start somewhere. Please don’t start the “virtual option” debate here. |
That tuition listed isn’t per class. It’s per class, per term. |
