My rising 4th grader has gotten into part time AAP services + advanced math. My kid was not in advanced math/AAP last year.
For advanced math/AAP math, is there any recommended supplementing material that I can use over the summer? Are there any specific areas that I should focus on with my kid to make sure that they are not behind when they get pulled into AAP math this fall? |
| They've all but eliminated acceleration before 5th, so I wouldn't worry about it. Practice automaticity in multiplication facts and they'll be fine. |
| Former 4th grade teacher here. Several 4th grade stands require strong math facts. Long division and factoring come to mind. It’s by far the most powerful thing you can do for math acceleration. |
| Similar situation here. We received an email from the AART saying our child was selected for Part Time AAP. We also received an email form the Principal saying they were selected for Advanced Math. I am curious if Part Time AAP and Advanced Math are one and the same? Or is Advanced Math something different? |
| Part time AAP might be what was once called LIII, which was a weekly pull out. Advanced Math is the math taught in Full time AAP, it is the accelerated math. |
| Lots of kids join advanced math in 4th and they catch up quickly. 3rd grade advanced math is barely any different than regular 3rd grade math. |
| Math facts, and also check out Beast academy level 3 |
| My kid is in 4th this year. We were recommended to have multiplication tables down which we did. But teacher apparently rogue and slammed them with 4th and 5th material much of the year. For example they started with place value (unit 2 4th) and moved right into order of operations (unit 2 5th) and so on. Because of the pace and order of the material, my kid didn't really retain a lot of it. I don't think this experience is typical but just to put it out there. |
| That isn’t “rogue”, the teacher was following the FCPS pacing guide. 4th grade advanced math includes 4th and 5th grade material. The following year, they will learn 6th grade math. |
4th grade math pacing changed this year. Order of operations does not show up in 4th grade AAP materials. It is in 5th grade Gen ed material though. Further, I spoke with moms of kids in another AAP class and they didn't know what I was talking about. Their kids were not learning order of operations at that time. I understand why the teacher did it though, because yes, next year is 6th grade material. It just wasn't ideal. https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary/fourth-grade/year-at-a-glance/advanced-math https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary/fifth-grade/year-at-a-glance/math |
| Totally agree it’s not ideal. From the link you posted, it is in the 4th grade advanced math pacing guide. It’s the last bullet point in Unit 2–“ Simplify numerical expressions with whole numbers using the order of operations.” |
Thanks for pointing that out. |
| Not necessary, my child started in advanced math in 4th and did just fine without any extra supplementation or preparation ahead of time. |
Um, my 4th grader learned order of operations this year in advanced math. |
In my child's school advanced math students from other classes join the AAP class just for math. This may or may not be the case in all schools though. |
