Summer job program

My kid applied to the MBSYEP and completed all the required paperwork. We have not yet received a job assignment. Have others received theirs? My kid is anxious to know his placement so wondering if we’re missing anything. Thanks!

As long as they got the email last week confirming they are fully in, they're good. DS hasn't gotten his yet either. I work for a host employer and the matching is still underway. I'd expect an email by next week, and kids can request transfers the first week as well.

My kid called them about this last week. They told her that job assignments would start going out this week.

So glad someone posted about this! This is my kid's first year and there's not a lot of actual info about how it works anywhere beyond all the hoops you have to jump through to qualify.

We are going to be gone for a week during the summer—is that gonna get him bounced from the program? I assume that kids can't work outside of that 6-week period.

He should talk to his site lead; I suspect it varies by host employer. My agency wouldn't kick him out--he just wouldn't get paid.

(We as a host agency also don't get a ton of information. Eventually most kids have a really great experience, though.)

Anyone know what the Youth Leadership Institute is? My kid was assigned to it but we’re not sure what exactly it is.

YLI is less like a job and more like professional development: https://summerjobs.dc.gov/page/mbyli

I've met graduates of it (both recent and older) and have been impressed with their poise and confidence.

My teen submitted all documentation needed and is marked as eligible but we did not complete the job selection task. Will this make him ineligible for a job assignment?

He should have received an email on or about May 29 with the subject "Congratulations – You’ve Earned a Job with MBSYEP This Summer!" If he did, then the assignment should be coming soon.

If he didn't, email summerjobs@dc.gov to see if there is still a path forward.
