Puppy Wakes up at 5:45

Anonymous
We need help. My five month old puppy sleeps all night in his crate starting at 9pm. But for the past week he’s been waking up at 5:45 am and won’t go back to sleep. Before he would give us until 6:30, which was manageable. 5:45 isn’t going to work.

The room is dark, we have a cover on his crate, an air purifier that creates white noise, plenty of activity and stimulation during the day, he goes to the bathroom right before bed and has a snack. All the things we were told to consider. At 5:45 he starts whining in there. I can’t leave him to whine louder and louder because he’ll wake up the kids who need their sleep.

When we let him out he’s not rushing outside to the bathroom. He just walks around like he was having FOMO, but everyone is obviously sleeping.

Any advice? Did I mention I’m tired?

Why won't 5:45 work? Get up. Get going.

You could try pushing his bedtime back an hour to 10pm, just like if you wanted a child to sleep later.

I've had dogs all my life and some are early risers and some like to sleep in. Currently, our 5 year old dog has woken up at 5:45am-6am since he was a puppy and our 8 year old dog is always happy to sleep in.

Make sure you are not feeding right when he wakes up, but other than that, there isn't much else you can do.

If there's a human he's closest to, have them wear an old shirt to bed for a few nights. Or exercise in that shirt to get your smell on it. Then put it in the crate with him; he might be lonely.

I have three dogs. One is RELENTLESS about the 5:45 am wakeup time. Another stays in bed until he hears the food hit the bowl from upstairs. The third is pretty flexible. The 5:45 dog kills me.

I have had dogs my whole life (and not well trained ones). They just lay there until we get up. My current puppy is 8 months old. She's in a pen in our room with a pee pad in case she needs it (she did when she was littler). She just holds it now until we get up around 7:30/8.

Could you ignore it to help train the dog to sleep in?

The crate is in my room, right next to my bed.

I can’t let him whine because that would wake up my kids in the next room.

To those saying some dogs just get up that early and I have to deal with it, I’m going to hope and pray you're wrong because I can’t wake up at 5:45 for the next 15 years.

My sister said her dog started sleeping in when they finally let her in the bed with them.

Our golden did this around 5 months too - primarily driven by the sun coming up earlier (even though we had a blanket on his crate too). Hate to say but this lasted through puppyhood - we just got used to waking up early, and honestly it was nice to get up and out for a long walk by 6am before it got hot. He’s five now and will get up at 7-8a now (when we wake up) mostly just to eat breakfast, walk - and then he’s back to bed!

Let him sleep in the bed.

He’s not totally potty trained so he needs to be in the crate at night. We’re also not dog in our bed people. Once he’s potty trained he doesn’t have to be in the crate.

DUH that's why people don't get puppies - also not to contribute to the industry of selling animals.

He may need the potty. Our four year old dog still wakes at night to potty even though we potty her before bed. Put the. To be later. That’s enough sleep when they sleep during the day.
