My son does not want to dress up for his eighth grade graduation. I know it’s not a big deal like high school but I also don’t want him to be the only one wearing a T-shirt and shorts.
This is going to vary by school, but I imagine that there are very few schools where the boys don’t wear at least a collared shirt.
It doesn’t matter and no one cares.
My kids wore khakis and polo shirts to their middle school graduations. Sneakers OK.
At our school, kids mostly did. Usually just khakis and a button down or polo. With sneakers. Some dressed up a bit more, some less.

It was called a promotion ceremony at our public middle school and there wasn’t good communication. My son went in athletic clothes and we didn’t even go. It seemed like it was an awards ceremony for the kids getting awards.
So for kid 2, I knew better and went. The girls mostly had on dresses. Many boys had on some type of pants or golf shorts but many still had on athletic clothes. Really, anything was fine. If you know any parents with older kids, ask them. But pants and a basic polo is safe. |
When I was in 8th grade, our theme for the middle school ceremony was literally "tacky tourist" (fanny packs, socks with sandals, etc, we were in Florida). I'd just ask another parent what it looks like.
Is it really the end of the world to ask a kid to look presentable for a few hours? He doesn't to, so what?
Khakis and a decent/collared shirt (polo or button down shirt) was the norm for DS’s class.
Boys were expected to wear minimum of khakis, tie, collared shirt and blazer. But majority of boys wore a full suit. This was private school.
Same, though there were some dress pants and ties mixed in, maybe 1/4 of the boys. I like seeing the kids dress formally for serious occasions, though I am glad that clean sneakers are being worn by both girls and boys. |
Do not procrastinate and get a last minute polyester suit from Amazon. I feel so terrible! My 8th grade son looked like a rumpled intern for AFLAC
|
No, just girls. We have decided that boys don't have to do even the bare minimum anymore.
Mine wore a polo type collared shirt and golf shorts. I don't think I made him tuck it in.
At our (public) school, it’s mostly khaki shorts or pants and either a polo or a button down (long or short sleeve) for the boys.
