Sharing my Wegovy Pill Experience

Anonymous
I just completed a month on the Wegovy Pill on the 1.5mg dose and wanted to share my experience since I was very worried about starting the medication because of the side effects and agonized over the decision for so long. I am someone who went on this for vanity weight loss and wanted to lose 10-15lbs total, which I have been trying to lose for the past 5 years with zero success as a 45 year old perimenopausal woman. I am 5’6” and my starting weight was 153, I want to get down to 140 (note that before having kids I had never weighed above 130 in my life. My actual starting weight was 160 but I was able to lose 7-10 lbs naturally but it kept creeping back up and was this never ending yo-yo effect. This is the first time I have been able to get the scale under 150 in 5 years. I lost 5-6 lbs total in one month on the pill, which is more than fine for me (not looking to drop it all at once). I am staying on 1.5 for the second month and hope I can lose at least another 4-5 lbs if not a touch more.

PROS:
Even on the lowest dose the reduction in food noise has been significant for me. I am someone who loves food and was always thinking about my next meal. I also could never leave anything uneaten on my plate despite feeling full - if it was there, I would eat it. While I still get hungry and have no problem eating meals, I stop when full and have no desire to finish everything in front of me. I am rarely hungry for snacks between meals, I am just not thinking about eating all the time so I don’t. I should caveat that I was already a very healthy eater so this has mainly helped me stay in my 1400-1500 calorie window (which is what I need to do to lose weight) and not overeat. It’s not a magic pill that allows you to eat total crap and still drop a ton of weight (well unless you’re still eating in a deficit because you don’t eat much of anything). It has also killed my cravings for sweets and fried foods. Usually when my kids are eating dessert or fries I will eat some, but I just don’t even have the desire. It’s really crazy (in a good way). I not longer battle myself over whether or not I need to eat something and when to stop.

For the first 3 weeks I was lucky to have no side effects other than feeling very tired the first 2 days on the pill, but that went away quickly.

CONS:
After week 3 some side effects did set in, mostly nausea and heartburn but so far it’s manageable and it’s not all day every day. I’ve had a couple days of mild headaches as well. It’s really important to eat protein and stay hydrated to keep nausea/heartburn at bay. I used to do intermittent fasting so I am generally not hungry in the morning, but had to retrain myself to eat a high protein breakfast to set myself up for success. I am not a huge meat eater so getting 100+ grams of protein is a real struggle for me and I am not hitting that goal so that could be part of my issue, but I am working on it. I’ve also noticed that when I have eaten certain bad foods it really triggers nausea / heartburn the next day - for example, last weekend I went to a family birthday dinner at a Mexican restaurant and had a few chips, a margarita and a few bites of dessert and felt the worst I have thus far the following day. I didn’t gain any weight from consuming those things because I didn’t have that much, I just felt like crap after. I’ve also had some constipation but for that under control.

Anyway, wanted to share my experience for anyone on the fence like I was. I am very happy to decided to go for it, although I recognize that people have different side effects, results and experiences. I don’t intend to stay on this forever but don’t know what my exit plan is yet. Thinking I will just keep going on the lowest dose until my body adapts and I no longer lose and then focus on maintaining, but would also consider going up to 4mg as well if I start gaining back. I don’t think I will go higher than that.

Useful. Thanks

Good for you! I’m happy you are having success and posting an honest experience. Try drinking a protein shake or 2 to get the protein in. It’s what I used to do when building muscle. I’m pretty-menopausal now too and am thinking about a GLP. I am very active but can’t seem to shut off my food noise and have gained weight over the past year due to eating more than I should. Your post help convince me I need to try a GLP.

OP where did you get it (who wrote you the prescription) and how much does it cost per month?

I’ve been on the injected Wegovy for a little over two years now. I have trouble hitting that protein goal as well, and have only been able to hit it consistently by adding a small protein shake. I hate that stuff that you buy at the store, with all of the fake sugar, it tastes terrible to me. So I make one out of almond milk, protein powder, and frozen fruit. It’s a bit of a pain to remember to make it, and I rarely actually feel like drinking it, but I try to do so it hits that protein goal.

I get it from Midi Health. They do take many insurances for the medical appointment part if you have a PPO plan, but sadly not mine. I paid $250 for the first visit, then $150 per month moving forward for them to essentially refill the RX. I have emailed my NP through the portal a couple times and found them to be responsive, but I haven’t had any specific issues I needed to address ASAP.

I think pay $149 per month for the meds themselves which come straight from a Wegovy authorized pharmacy. There is no tax or shipping cost.

With Goodrx I pay $149 per month for the pills and then $39 per month for the subscription.
I’m been on 1.5mg for 2 months and about to start the 4mg dose tomorrow.

My experience was the opposite of OP’s, and from what I can tell much less common. I progressed through the first three doses of Wegovy with absolutely NO reduction in food noise or less wanting to eat junk food. It was only through sheer willpower I managed to lose a few pounds, which I could have done without the drug and spending a lot of money since it’s not covered by my drug plan.

I moved to Zepbound, which has two kinds of drugs. Again, on the lowest dose, no effect at all. I started the next higher dose last week and finally feel a tiny lessening in the urge to eat and lost a pound more easily this week. No gastrointestinal side effects, but it’s so disappointing. My primary care doctor prescribes it.

Ive had the opposite effect of OP as well. In menopause, 55, skinny fat i.e. very high levels of visceral fat and high cholesterol so prescribed by my doc.

I think i might be the only person in the world who actually put on weight on the 1.5 mg dose. Ive upped to 4 mg and am losing weight slowly - but so far its only the weight i put on.

PP here. I was hoping to micro dose but dont think 4mg pill is micro anymore

Thank you for sharing. If I went on it, it would be for vanity purposes only as like you I only need to lose 10 or 15 pounds. That said I will continue to try to do it without a pill.

I gained weight on the shot at .25 (starting shot dose) and did not gain or lose on .5 or 1.0. First 1.7 shot tomorrow and really hoping this does it. My doctor says we can always switch to Zepbound, which works better, but it is even more expensive. My insurance does not cover it despite being obese and having (a little) high cholesterol.

Are those of you on the pill managing to take it at the same time every day? That would be tough for me. Up very early during the week and thus like to sleep in one weekends when I can.

Obese with a little high cholesterol here, too, and I did not lose any weight on Mounjaro over the course of several months of upping the dose. Plenty to lose, too, not just vanity weight.
