It’s quite a sight to see students traveling by bus to attend Archbishop Carrol and Washington Latin Cooper Campus. If these were traditional public schools would the walk to and from the bus stop on Harewood Road would probably be more convenient. Some kids tend to walk up and down Taylor Street NE to get to the Brookland Metro Station rather than get on a crowded D74 bus. It’s a little bit of a walk from the D74 bus stop to Cooper near the North Capitol and Harewood intersection. By the way, the immersion elementary school is there too.
There are plans for a bike lane. Additionally, work on the bus route to make it more convenient for residents, students, and parents. Let’s talk about the D74 bus route that goes to and from Brookland Metro. Maybe there also needs to be a bus route that goes to nearby Ft. Totten Metro. |
That whole area is a mess. It's like they've done no planning for the opening of Cooper. A bike lane there sounds like a terrible idea. |
| I don’t know that WMATA needs to plan so much as Latin Cooper needs to advocate. |

I was just wondering this last night.
From what I understand, 2nd St students often take the school shuttles in early middle school, but most transition to taking Metro in upper grades. How is that shaking out for Cooper? Cooper feels a lot less transit accessible than 2nd St to me. Do Cooper students keep riding the school shuttles into upper grades, or do they just make do with transit? |
The Department of Transportation needs to get involved. It's only a matter of time before a kid gets hit by a car. That intersection with 1st street is dangerous. |
Yes - Latin (or the Latin community) should proactively reach out to DDOT. DDOT isn’t going to move without advocacy. They have plenty of other equally urgent matters of public safety to address. Put your concerns on their radar. |
DDOT is too busy putting up traffic lights at intersections with no cross traffic and building bike lanes that no one asked for. |
| This advocacy people are talking about has in fact been going on since the very beginning of the school year, FWIW. WMATA, DDOT, 311, etc. |
It’s also the way the 18 wheelers get to 395 from the solid waste transfer station at fort totten. It’s EXTREMELY dangerous. |
| A classical education should not be at the risk of your life!! |
| This location is exactly why we didn’t lottery for Cooper. And we technically live within walking distance. But I would NEVER make my kid walk there |
Cooper is a mile from Brookland metro. 2nd street is .8 of a mile. Not sure why people keep saying 2nd street is so close to the metro. Plus you have to cross NH ave to get to 2nd st. Lots of Brookland kids just take the d74 and others metro and do the same. My kid is at cooper and takes the d74. She has to cross 2 streets on the way to school after she gets off the bus and a crossing guard is at 1 of them. The guard is there on the way home also. And Latin has someone posted to assist. |
It’s a pleasant, pedestrian-populated 15 minute walk from Fort Totten to 2nd. It’s a desolate 25 minute walk (uphill!) from Brookland to Cooper. It’s not even comparable if you are being honest. I can’t speak to the school quality because we dismissed it entirely because the location is awful. |
“Uphill” If your child thinks walking up that hill is taxing you probably need to evaluate their fitness. I’m old and I run up that thing frequently. My 11 year old isn’t bothered by the hill and really just socializes the whole walk if she chooses to walk. Or she just takes a bus that drops her off a few blocks away. |
I run it all the time as well. But the route sucks. |
