What is the scariest book you've ever read? I'm thinking fiction, but I suppose there are some non-fictions out there that could qualify.

I remember that when I was a kid I read The Amityville Horror and it scared me so badly that not only did I throw the book away, I didn't throw it in the trash in the kitchen, I took it into the alley and put it in our big garbage can there.

I think House of Leaves is the only book that's given me actual nightmares, but this is the one I found most disturbing.

Room. I got it as a prize at a book exchange. I opened it and couldn't get past the first few pages. I don't like dwelling on terrible crimes and don't want to spend downtime on fictional ones. Learned that from watching 1 terrible episode of CSI:SVU and, earlier, a terrible 80s movie about santeria (the one with the spider-filled cursed zit). This kind of content sends me running for chick lit and rom coms.

Blood Meridian is right up there too. I can’t believe it hasn’t been made into a movie.

A book on the zodiac killer I got at borders clearance section about 30 years ago before he was well known.
