My office is business casual but 100% of people wear denim it seems like. I’m in my 30s and grew up in the south and my mom never thought denim was appropriate unless you were running errands or around the house or something - never for going out to eat, church, pta meetings, etc and most other women followed suit. I personally have opted for more modern denim styles (like the straight leg) but with a nicer shoe like a ballet flat, never with sneakers. What’s the general consensus? I work in downtown dc for reference
I am with your mom. It’s casual. But since this is what 100% of people in your office wear, so this is what’s considered “business casual” in your office.
I would consider jeans business casual if paired with a blazer or work appropriate top and nice shoes, as opposed to sneakers and a t-shirt or sweatshirt.
I do not consider them business casual. They aren’t. Jeans are for casual Fridays. I see lots of people wear them daily though. My dh is an engineer and has trouble working in pants/khakis. He says they aren’t comfortable enough. He wears suits for briefings downtown and then has to change into jeans before going to his office. He remarked to me once that he thought he’d have better focus in shorts. Who knows- maybe our kids will wear shorts when they are working. Or our grandkids will wear pajamas in 50 years. Casual seems to be trending.
Depends
Since 100% of the people in your office wear jeans, jeans are appropriate for your office. If you are in your 30s, you are far too young to be tied to fashion rules from a different time and place.
No.
Agreed. I still limit them to mostly Fridays but I’m a lawyer and I’ll wear nice darker wash jeans with ankle boots, a belt, a plain shirt and a blazer. I have a colleague that has cream colored jeans that wear them with a nice top and it looks good. I think they have to be not too “aged”, no rips, not tight, and pair it with nice top and a belt. |
Only if they’re the type of Jean/pant hybrid that came about semi recently. J crew has for men. Mmlafleur better than denim for women. To me the key is not looking regular denim color
+1. Jeans with no rips, nice tip or blazer -- fine for office. Tight or ripped jeans and a tee -- not fine. |
NO
+1 jeans are casual If they're not blue but instead black etc you can get away with them in most non-formal workplaces |
I'm from the Northeast and yes, jeans with a sweater or button down shirt and ballet flats or loafers are absolutely business casual.
It is considered casual but if styled nicely is often fine for most offices and all but the nicest of restaurants. Casual clothing is more accepted than it used to be, you can thank the high tech business world and the athleisure movement.
Nope.
