| I know this question was raised in previous threads but hoping to get clearer answers about what metrics APS uses to consider pre-algebra placement for 6th graders? My son has tested well in math and we expect he'd be placed in Math 6th Advanced, but I was shocked to hear from him that he would like to try pre-algebra placement. He's a kid who does well by elevated expectations, so while I definitely wouldn't push him for pre-algebra placement, I also want to support him pushing himself if he has the internal motivation. However, I'm not clear if this is even a realistic placement and I can't figure out exactly how this is determined. |

Allegedly... If a student scores between a 466-549 they will be placed in math 6 advanced. If a student scores between a 550-600 (in addition to looking at the following data points below) they will be automatically enrolled in pre-algebra: CogAT (Quantitative and/or nonverbal: 126+) End of year MAP growth percentile (must be in upper quadrant- 80th + percentile) 4th grade math SOL You can also do parent placement. I places my kid and it has been fine he has gotten an A all three years (he is now in Geometry) |
