| My parent had to leave an apartment and is now in a nursing home under Medicaid. She has no assets and receives a social security check every month. I cleaned out the apartment and remaining are a bill from the local utility and another for renter's insurance. Not the best question to ask, but should I pay them? Is there anything they can do to her to go after payment, considering her present condition? |
| You may have to pay the utility, but insurance I don’t think so. Maybe ask the property manager? |
| Is it really worth fighting the utility bill? It can't be that much. |
About $280 because two months are due. |
|
Does it cover a period when she lived there?
Does she need the money or are living expenses covered at the nursing home? I believe in paying legitimate debts. |
| It's not in your name, so no. |

You don't have to pay.
Contact the companies and let them know that she is now on Medicaid and living in a nursing home. This means all of her income goes to this cost now. They will likely cancel the bill. |
The utility company said they would not credit because electricity was used. Well, naturally there was a refrigerator but they would not budge. |
| pay the utility bill and cancel the renters insurance as thats usually paid in advance. |
