| My senior says today is the senior skip day and no seniors will be coming in? What is this beast - is it common in all schools? (Asking because we did not go to school in the US.) Thanks! |
| Our senior skip day at the HS i work at was back in April on that half day that was supposed to be a day off. It was specifically chosen as a day that would have minimal impact. |

Yes today is skip day. My DD is staying home.....
And yes, it's fairly common. |
| So late it already happened one day in April another on May 1 |
| Different high schools have different skip days. It is a thing in this country. Let your senior enjoy this tradition with their friends. |
When I was in school, we subtracted our graduation year digits from the last day of school for seniors digits and that would give us the senior skip day. However, that's hard to do these days with the testing carnival that is the month of May. I hope your DD enjoyed this nice warm day.

Thanks all! We were just scratching our heads and wondering because it feels there were many such days in the past month or two, except they were not actually called "senior skip day"!!

| OP, since you didn't go to school in the U.S., you do realize that Senior Skip Day is not actually a school-sanctioned holiday, right? |
| DS is a senior and didn’t mention today was one. I think it depends on the school. But he has told me of 2 senior skip days already this year. He has also shared that attendance really seems to have dropped off among seniors since AP exams began. And this is a W school. |

1. Senior skip days are not approved by schools.
2. It's a bunch of seniors who get together to decide that on X day, everyone is going to skip. Except that high schools being so big, it ends up being the Senior Skip Day for that group, and other seniors may stay in school... and maybe they organize another Senior Skip Day at another time. Which explains why there are multiple Skip Days for one senior class (and perhaps kids who take multiple days off). 3. Even non seniors skip class after APs. My 10th grader had 4 AP exams, and is feeling pretty relaxed right now. She had medical appointments all morning and decided not to return to school this afternoon. She has a 4.0 GPA and knows what to do to keep it that way... so if she wants to skip and do the one piece of Spanish homework at home, that's crucial to keeping that GPA... that's entirely fine by me. |
| My school authorized our Senior Skip Day. They approached admin and requested a date and both students and admin agreed on the least important day for them to miss. We were told to mark students as unexcused but allow makeup work and extend due dates |
| Do they skip and do something else all together? |
At our school there's literally a day when many of the seniors make their way (somehow, in small groups) to Philadephia for a Hoagie! But then there's often another skip day in the fall the day before early action college applications are due. So some skip days are more fun than others... |
Yes. And it involves a lot of drinking |
| I thought every day in MCPS was skip day. |
