Math SOL - Algebra 1 HNS

Hi everyone, Math SOL Algebra 1 HNS results were posted this morning. How did your students do? DD scored 520. We were expecting something above 580, so we were wondering how the scores were for other students as well.

Kid bombed it 420... seems like she had test anxiety and was nervous about it despite getting to the geometry portion of it. Looks like we will de-accelerate her down to pre-algebra.

I didn't think that the Algebra 1 SOL had geometry questions on it. So you are expunging the Algerba 1 grade and going to move her into Math 7H next year?

DD got 525, last year she had it in 580’s, she told me all her friends got around 530

DS also passed advanced but around 530. He always scored above 580 in math SOL. I know at least 30% of his 6th grade peers in Algebra 1H scored 600. The teacher shard that a vast majority of passed advanced so DS' score is probably on the lower end. I am not worried but I will have him extra prepared for the final just in case.

Honestly confused. 530 on Algebra 1H is now considered low?

It is an 89% so not really low but there are a lot of kids who score higher on the Algebra 1 SOL in 7th grade, and potentially 6th grade now. I think DS scores a 571 last year.

It is passed advanced, which is great. The average for the kids taking it in 6th grade will be out in July, I would expect that to be below the average score.

One of the problems with the Algebra 1 SOL is that teachers have flat out said they can teach kids how to answer the questions using Desmos with the kids not actually understanding the material. Teachers have discussed this on this site pretty frequently. They have said that they see kids with C's and B's in Algebra one pass advanced on the SOL. Normally the earlier they take it, the better the SOL scores.

My son got a 600 but really thrived in Algebra 1H (100s on all tests, etc.).

I assume 89% is based on last year’s Algebra 1H scores? Or did you already receive this info from your school. I would have guessed that 530 is more than 89%.

I divided 530 by 600 and got 89%. The percentages don't really matter. Your kid passed advanced, which is what matters right now, and the rough score in terms of a percentage is 89%. Technically it is an 88%, the score is an 88.3333 so should be rounded down.

I don't know why people put so much weight on the SOLs, they don't mean much. And yes, I know that might change next year. Your child passed advanced meaning that they more then meet the Statewide Standards for Algebra. The SOL does not cover the extenstions for Honors. My kid told me that they did most of the extension work after the SOL last year.

A 530 is missing 2-4 questions out of 50. The difference between a 580 and a 530 is 1 or 2 questions.

The PP who said it's 89% is not accurate, that's just 530/600 but that's not how scoring works.

To get a 400, the cut score has historically been 24/50. To get a 500, it's been 45/50.

Yes because tons of FCPS kids, especially those in Region 2 schools, all score 600. Whether they take it in 6th grade (we're at Haycock pyramid), 7th grade or 8th grade. But primarily, I think most kids are taking it in 6th or 7th grade now, with some outliers taking Alg (honors or regular) in 8th grade.
