Recent graduate without a job

Do you have a graduate who has not found a job yet? If so , what field? [I wish them all positive things in their search]. I am concerned about my rising senior who goes to a T-20, is in a math-data science major and struggled so much to find anything for this summer. I am wondering if I should ask him to start exploring the option of grad school.

Not my kid, but yes, hearing of many. All T5/10/20 too. They are not immune.

There are other threads on this, but yes, there are a lot of 2026 college graduates who do not have jobs. the economy is horrible and applications for various types of grad programs are way up as a result.

+1 FWIW, my son was in a math-data science type major and graduated last year (not at a highly ranked school). Has a job as a data scientist. What helped a lot was gaining on-campus experience by working on data analysis projects with professors across different disciplines. It was a structured program as part of his major.

I've been following a lot of top20 schools on Instagram and it seems like more than 50% of grads who are interviewed on the "what are you doing next year?" posts are going to grad school. Another 25% are volunteering or doing internships. I'd say 25% say "I have a job at XYZ."

The real stats are closer to 70% working 10-20% grad school and volunteering takes the rest

There are instagram accounts for colleges that ask this? Crazy! My kid is at a t5 and I have not heard of this. Graduating soon and has a job. Very aware that the offer might be rescinded due to economy and is looking for other jobs as well in case things don’t work out in fall.

Top LAC grad, internships every year and research every semester since sophomore year started. DS’s resume is where I was 5 years into my career. No job and commencement is in a few weeks. It’s disheartening.

Is he looksmaxxxing?

I’ve noticed in this zoomer cohort that the ones getting jobs in this market (holding all other things constant, like school tier / major / etc) are better looking.

It is well documented and has been since they started looking at this that attractive people are more likely to get hired than average or ugly people.

How can this be a surprise to anyone?

Not a single person DC knows is jobless or no plans. About half are grad or professional school bound, now or in a year and they have a position for the year. The rest have jobs. All. Stem major at an ivy but friends are all varieties of majors.

I guess employers don't agree with USNWR. Shocker. Also, it's not the school it's the major. Engineering is the future. Book it.

Not all of us are cut out to be engineers. What are we supposed to do?
