Apple Watch
Garmin Heart Rate Monitor
A smartphone app like Strava or Pacer

Has anyone used a cheaper one from Amazon? It's unlikely to get more use after the class and I'd prefer to spend less

He or she may not need it if they play a sport. My daughter’s coach would sign off on her hours.

We got a fitbit last year and it did not work well - it gave my son a lot of credit for certain activities and zero credit for others. I tried to take it on a jog - I am slow (12 min mile) but after an hour of running it said I had less than 5 min of activity. I think we will do Strava this year.
