Recent experiences at Douglas MacArthur elementary?

Zoned for this school and would be interested to hear recent experiences - kid would enter K in 2027. Likely plan to move to a new district before middle school, but, for a few reasons not quite ready to make a move yet. Will also be exploring less expensive (<$30K/year) private school options...

Anyway, just looking for experiences - positive or negative. And if you are zoned for this school but went private, why. Happy to get private recommendations, as well. We are not catholic but not opposed to sending to catholic school if a good fit.

Have kids there now - you'd be crazy to spend money on tuition when DMES exists. Principal is amazing, as is staff. The building itself is gorgeous, too. Lots of diversity (racial, economic, etc).

The school is currently great.

We will see how next year goes though. We've been told to expect class sizes around 30 kids due to redistricting! I don't know what the school board was thinking when they approved this redistricting plan.

All of the east end schools, except JH, are fantastic. These are children primarily from highly educated, wealthy, two parent households. Your kid will thrive in any of them. Be very very very skeptical of the loud mouth naysayers about ACPS. They have an axe to grind.

- parent of a sophomore at an Ivy and a ACHS senior going to UVA. Both went Maury-GW-AC.

The elementary schools have gotten worse since this person sent kids there. Don’t listen to non-recent experience.

Thanks all! Op here - great to hear some positive responses. It's definitely our preference to not pay for private.

+1. You need only go to the Alexandria City Community for Public Education Facebook group to see plenty of current parents raising issues. They are hardly “loud mouth naysayers.”

A parent of a senior has not had kids in elementary school since pre-Covid. Totally different ballgame

The last three posts all came from the same IP address.

OP- like I said, ignore the person with an axe to grind. Their SN daughter graduated from TC 11 years ago.

I wrote the middle and not the other two.

The person claiming it all came from the same IP—which of course is impossible to know unless you’re Jeff—is likely the same lunatic that derails every ACPS thread by making stuff up. Just wait, pretty soon she will accuse us of being jealous because we actually have kids at West Springfield or are St Stephen’s and St Agnes parents who have kids at JMU. Just like the “their SN daughter graduated from TC 11 years ago.” What? Completely insane claim with no basis in anything.
