Anyone’s college kid not have a job this summer?

Daughter getting ready to come home for the summer - with no job lined up
Wondering how common of a scenario this is.

What are her plans? Did she ask you for help finding a job, or she's not interested in one?

Mine (rising sophomore) is in the same position. Applied for a few things in the spring, but didn’t get any of them. I said they have to do something, whether work or volunteer, so they’re looking.

Yes my kid just has no motivation to get one.

My rising junior is in the same boat. Has an unpaid internship for part of the summer. Is applying for paid employment for the rest of the summer (retail, food service).

Well, then that is really not the same, esp. if the internship is major related.

I think more kids are in the same boat than we may think. This forum makes it seem like everyone’s kid has multiple internships, starting in high school.

Age matters, as does intended career track. Younger=less of a problem, non-finance or tech career goal=less of a problem.

Where did they work in high school during the summers? Mine worked on a summer camp and at a country club pool. Those jobs kept him employed until he got an internship after junior year in college.

My rising junior is taking classes because he couldn't get an internship.

My HS senior has been lifeguarding every summer. I hope she finds something better next summer, but she knows she has that job available to her when she comes back from college i would rather her get a job at a restaurant, where she can also work a few shifts during winter and spring breaks.

I still see some ads in Nextdoor where families are seeking a summer nanny.

Smart move. Mine will take some certification classes.

My rising sophomore has never had a job. They have a lot of volunteer experiences. We had them apply for paid employment in the last week ( food service and retail). So far no luck for call backs or interviews. Husband and I think working a regular job would be a good experience for the kid.

In the meantime, she is taking a summer class and plans to do some additional ai and python classes/training.

Classes + unpaid major related internship for rising junior

My son and his girlfriend just got jobs- retail, etc. I would highly recommend having your kids look now before the high school get out and they are also looking for the same jobs.
