Cyst before IVF: so upset

Anonymous
I am so frustrated and upset that they found a small cyst during my mock transfer. I have another week or so of BCPs to go before my pre-IVF screening and am scared the cyst will still be there or will grow. The doctors hope it will disappear by then, but I've been feeling the same pain on my right side (similar to o. pain) every day and I don't think it's going away.

Has anyone experienced this? At what point do they aspirate the cyst, and how much does that cost out of pocket? Does this reduce IVF success rates, and will the cycle be postponed?

THis happens all the time so try not to be too upset. They just need your ovaries to be "quiet" (cyst free) before starting IVF. I couple more weeks of BCP usually shrinks them up.

Cysts are a normal part of a womans cycle. They are called functional cysts. They just can't do an IVF cycle if you have a functional cyst. The reason is because functional cysts love IVF meds and the meds will just increase the cyst's size.

THere are other types of cysts that may need surgical removal. However, it's unlikely....especially if you've had recent ultrasounds (like for your day 3 eval) and it wasn't there.

I was going to start an IVF cycle and the doctor discovered I had a cyst. So, he told me to sit that month out. I was really nervous like you and my nurse explained that cysts are very common and come and go. The only thing different is that you are looking in your uterus every month when you are going through fertility treatments. So, you will see the cysts. Typically, you don't have as many views of the inside of your uterus and the cysts come and go without you even knowing. Generally, the BCPs will make the cysts go away and it will be very unlikely that you will need surgery. So, don't get too worried--but easier said than done right? Also don't worry about the cyst affecting your success. The cycle I sat out and was waiting to get my period again to start IVF, I became pregnant naturally.

I started my IVF cycle with an endo cyst (been there for a while). The doctor wasn't too concerned about it. It did shrink quite a bit while on BCPs.
The doctor said it's only a concern if it makes it difficult to retrieve eggs that ovary - and they make the call to drain it while doing the ER procedure. In my case, they left it alone, and basically ALL of my mature follicles were on that one ovary.
