Aside: maybe 20 years ago, VZW really did have better coverage than most competitors. That is NOT true today.
Along Interstate highways and in most major metro areas there is little coverage difference across the big 3 carriers. Minor differences exist, but any of the big 3 might be best in some specific part of a major metro area, but all basically have similar coverage.
In a specific place, particularly in rural America, any carrier might be a bit better or worse. Check and compare coverage maps for the specific rural areas one frequents.
What changed is that more low-band (example: 700 MHz band) spectrum became available and T-Mobile bought a lot of it. Low-band spectrum has less propagation loss with distance than higher band spectrum. VZW was ill-advised by their "expert" in NJ and mostly bought higher frequency band 5G spectrum. AT&T and T-Mobile bought 5G spectrum more wisely, so their real world 5G coverage is better.
