| Dear all, I'm a MCPS parent who is thinking about how to deal with the Taylor administration curriculum changes (moving to "regional programming" rather than magnets, getting rid of Compacted Math and enrichment at elementary level). We moved to the Churchill cluster in order to access Blair and other magnets, and create a good fallback option of kids don't get selected through lottery. Cannot afford private options since we have 3 kids. Now I'm unsure I want to stay in MoCo. I keep hearing about the "Tag" pull-out enrichment in PG County. Can anyone tell me about the Tag model in PG County? Are these magnet programs strong, how much is admissions based on lottery vs. Cogat scores, how is the curriculum, which schools/clusters are good? |
| I can’t answer that particular question, but I will say we moved to PG and because of that, can afford schools we would t be able to in MoCo. |

You are identified TAG based on your CogAt score and teacher recommendation. Then you have to enter a lottery to get into the TAG school. You are not ranked based on CogAT school, you are just TAG or not TAG.
If kids are identified TAG and not in a TAG school, kids still receive enrichment but it depends on the model in the school. In our school about 30% of the kids are TAG identified so it is integrated into the classroom, in other schools they pull the kids out of class (I don't know how often) for TAG. My son is in 4th, and starting in 5th grade there will be an advanced math class. |
Are you sure that will continue? Genuine question. We had compacted math until this year and it will be gone starting next year |
