25 APs not enough for Top 10

Anonymous
Kid that took 25 APs in high school couldn’t crack top 10, but still got into UCLA.

It’s not only APs, everything else does matter.

Endless and pointless grinding does not impress T10 colleges.

Stupid. Collecting AP's like a trophy. Shallow. Self study, also. Why?

I will say the WL from Case surprised me. Maybe it was yield management.

Taking 25 APs is not a good look.

That was a stupid strategy. You have to have a hook. Nobody cares about APs. Everybody takes them!

Meh, "25 aps" just means you went to a generic Public school grind factory that bought into the college board grift.

AP precalc should not be a thing, for example.

At this point, "AP" just means honors track. You are a strong student, but it doesn't make you extraordinary.

Exactly.

Once you have 5s on 6 APs, additional APs are not even predictive of additional success in college. Take them if that’s the honors track in your high school, sure, but to self study?! That’s a terrible hobby. Volunteer, tutor, get a job, join a club — almost anything would be better than self-studying for your 25th AP.

While the student might have been beyond extreme by taking 25 APs, this reminds me of the annual "news" of one student getting accepted to 80 (or whatever the number) colleges, raking up 1 (or whatever) million of scholarships along the way. So silly and meaningless.

I disagree with everyone above. 25 APs is INCREDIBLY impressive. Very few kids can take that many APs and do well starting freshman year.

I am guessing the kid was weak in other areas. For top 10, we already know you need something very special and more individually driven.

This isn't surprising. Kid got into top 20 schools that are ok with more one-dimensional students like UCLA.

Sounds like a boring kid!

I agree with yohlu, taking 25 APs and doing well is very impressive. It is not easy to do. Some of the science APs are not easy.

If only they could play the violin!

He says right in the video that he took major risks with his essays and at one point, he says he didn’t even answer Northwestern‘s prompt.

APs are so basic/standard that they are never impressive.

This sounds like a kid with no passion or interest. Just grinding away at standardized high school coursework.
