What academic awards does your MCPS high school give prior to senior year?

What *academic awards* does your MCPS high school give *prior* to senior year? Which HS? Things like book awards. TIA

BCC - haven't heard of any. DD is in 10th grade there.

I think in theory underclassmen can get the departmental awards. When we were at RM, at least, any teacher could nominate students for the best in department award. The year my daughter was a senior, the teacher that taught most of the seniors was a real jerk that seemed to affirmatively dislike all the students, and refused to nominate anyone in his classes. So the award went to a sophomore in a much lower level class.

I shoulda dd that teacher is no longer at RM -- kudos to the RM admin for getting rid of him and unloading him on another MCPS HS. I think he is no longer teaching the advanced classes either. Which is good because he was terrible at it.

My kids attended two different MCPS high schools, and I've never heard of any academic awards... despite them getting straight As in advanced classes.

Unfortunately, I have no insight beyond a basic Google search and no idea which ones are done in MCPS.

Parents of a senior and recent graduate and I am not aware of any. Also no honor roll.

When my kids were in MCPS, kids in the automotive program could compete for skills awards. But I think it was a state program and not only MCPS. I don’t know that I’ve heard of other awards.

My son won a Harvard Prize Book when he was a junior in MCPS. The prize was to be invited to a lunch where someone tried to convince a group of seniors to apply to Harvard. He never got the actual book that was supposed to come with it. He also did not apply to Harvard.

Awards are highly discouraged around here. That is why you don't hear about them. There is very little to gain and so much to lose. For every student that gets an award of any kind, there will be 50 angry parents of students that did not get it. Awards mostly come from external entities, not MCPS.
