DOJ: please allow telework instead of signing bonuses

Anonymous
Many attorneys would apply if you allow a couple of days per week telework. It’s better than signing bonuses.

They can't credibly commit to that as an organization.

I don't think either telework or signing bonuses would make people run to work at the current DOJ.

OP is 100% correct in principle, though I think it would take more than two days per week to move the needle because people can get that in the private sector. I think it would need to be at least four days per week of telework. The more DOJ allows telework, the more they'll be able to attract qualified candidates. People may disagree with this president, but if you give them a well-paying job with lots of flexibility, they will look past policy disagreements.

I think this goes well beyond policy disagreements. You are going to be asked to lie and bring legally baseless cases.

Also, how could anyone trust these guys will honor any agreement about telework after the last 18 months? You’d have to be a total moron to trust any such promise.

You can't put that in an offer letter, since it could change at any time.

But that would be illegal.

+1. It's not worth anything as a promise.

The DOJ doesn't want qualified attorneys. They want attorneys who don't have any policy disagreements. These attorneys would welcome any job, even those that aren't well-paying and have no flexibility.

I think people in the DOJ want qualified attorneys. But it's clear that this administration does not. The best thing would be for qualified attorneys currently in the DOJ to leave. Then expectations will lower and OPM can fill it with attorneys who are desperate to take any job.

+1. The administration wants attorneys who are willing to take bogus cases and lie to judges. Which qualified attorney would want that job? Better to shape the job to attract the attorneys who would be willing to take that kind of work on.

This would work for all fed jobs...but it is not the current policy. Remember the goal is for us to wake up traumatized every day!

Im at DOJ and the only bar for hiring attorneys is whether you are willing to defend this lawless administration. Most principled attorneys have left. They’re not trying to attract talent. You are right however that the lower pay should be compensated by more flexibility like telework

Telework is not worth sacrificing my law license.

maybe a dumb question but does telework/WFH preference indicate party affiliation in current environment?
