Purdue vs U of Mich engineering

These will likely be my child’s top picks for next year. Curious if anyone’s child was deciding between these two for engineering recently or in the past few yrs and what they ended deciding and why. Anyone else can chime in with opinion as well. It would be for mechanical or electrical engineering

Both excellent engineering schools. UM might be 1/2 step ahead but not in a meaningful way

They are equal. Both are huge colleges and with having 60,000 students you get access to a large amount of resources.

Both great for engineering. No wrong choice here. This is more a question about vibe and what works for the student.

Purdue OOS is half the price and they are both great!

I am a Michigan grad (non-engineering). I loved my time in Ann Arbor. It will be fine either way. I work with engineers from both. So let your kid choose. In the Midwest, these students have similar access to engineering jobs.

If your kid wants a prestige career of some kind or to work internationally maybe do some more investigation. Just to learn.

OOS cost is the biggest difference, followed by Ann Arbor being a much better college town than West Lafayette.

Both bad weather!

Quite a stark contrast in the political atmosphere in these two cities. If your kid enjoys protesting, Ann Arbor is a better fit.

Purdue is less expensive with a solid reputation. Great choice if the student knows they want straight engineering.

If the student wants to combine with business or pursue other prestige careers, UMich is stronger.

Purdue, UIUC, Michigan just depend on field in engineering. Also penn state, etc.

They compete for same students. Best attribute is that not have insanely low acceptance rates of the snotty private colleges so much more accessible.

I'd say Purdue engineering is a tad easier to get in than Michigan engineering. It is also based more on stats at Purdue than at Michigan.

I’d just rather be in AA than West Lafayette, so…..

I like the confidence. You must be new to this game. Nothing is "likely" with admissions these days regardless of your kid's stats.

I like that Purdue has engineering college at the center of campus. As where Mich, it’s a 15 min bus ride away.
