Vitamin D level-- surprised I'm low

Anonymous
Anyone else here think they've been eating a diet high in Vitamin D, even taking supplements, and you're still low? Just got my bloodtest results and very surprised. I'm in my early 50s-- is this just something hard to bring up the older you get, even if you sit in the sun and eat well?

People in the northern hemisphere really should be told by their doctors at their well visits that most adults and children have low levels of vit D! It seems like negligence not to tell people.

It's extremely common, and indeed the norm, OP. Get yourself a vit D supplement.

That wasn't clear, and it depends on the dose.

OP again. Doc advised me to take a supplement, so I'll be doing that. Thought I was eating all the good foods, though, like fish and eggs. Realized the yogurt I usually eat has no vitamin D. Guess I need to look for more fortified foods going forward.

Low Vitamin D and low thyroid levels go hand in hand.

I've been supplementing but not remembering to take it every day and had labs with my annual physical this week and I was still low.

It’s hard to get from food. You really need sunshine or supplements.

Vitamin d is fat soluble you have to take it with fat my doctor said to take it with my biggest meal of the day with fat.

I had the opposite issue- my dermatologist and GYN both generally recommended taking a Vitamin D supplement (not because of labs). I took it for about a year and my primary care tested my Vitamin D level at my annual physical in March- it was really high and she recommended that I stop the supplement.

Get outside for a bit without sunscreen. Just about 30 minutes.

How much are you taking? I take 5000 iu and my level was perfect (74). If you're only taking 1000 or 2000 IU then you need to go up.
