DPR Rec Basketball League

Anonymous
My six year old son is currently doing a season of basketball skills via Volo Kids. He’s really, really enjoying it and would like to play in a league.

I’ve heard that there’s a DPR rec basketball league that would be good for his age range. We’re really close to the Columbia Heights rec center, and I believe they have a team. I’ve heard that signup in November, and you have to be ready because it fills up in like 5 mins.

Has anyone ever had a kid do this? How was their experience? Do they get to play on a team and have actual games against other teams? What’s the time commitment like? How do I know exactly when to sign up?

Or are there other basketball leagues we should look into? We’re not very sporty, so we don’t really know what we’re looking for. We have another child and no car (and he’s only six!) so we’re looking for something close by without a big time commitment.

We did, it’s fun, cheap, 2x a week practice and then 5-6 weeks of games. Just keep in mind the games are not at the Columbia Heights Rec Center so you will need to travel for those. I think the sign up was full within 2 hours of it going live.

OP here.

Thank you!

How do we know which days are practices? And are the games on weekends? I’d love more details on time/place/location before I sign up if it’s possible.

Not PP but our kiddo has done 2 seasons so far starting at 5. This past season, practices were Tuesdays and Fridays, games Saturdays. Sign ups are in late November/early December. We'll do it again for 8U. The other option we've considered is PPA, but it is way more expensive and games in Bethesda.

Practices at Columbia Heights and games at Kenilworth, Edgewood, Raymond or Deanwood usually.

Registration is next week for DPR summer programs. The schedule is here

https://dprprograms.splashthat.com/

You need to create an account to register and should do that well in advance. You can log in 10-15 minutes before registration opens to be placed in a queue, and when you get to the front of the queue you’ll have access to actually register. That may happen several (many) minutes after registration opens. It can be very frustrating. But there are a lot of offerings and very inexpensive! We’ve had some disappointments but some successes as well. We’ve found the actual programming to be hit or miss.

Good luck!

DPR 6U basketball is a winter sport. The basketball summer league is 10U and up.
