It's for the living room. We have a red velvet couch; a rug that's tan, brown, gold and orange; and an gold/orange chair. I like color. So I was thinking about a blue paint color (like this: http://www.planetpinkngreen.com/benjamin-moore-aura-paints-falling-in-love-all-over-again/), but I can't decide if that's too much. Thoughts? Suggestions?
Have you thought about grays? would really make your couch & rug pop.
You need to go get samples and put them up. That blue will look very different depending on light: the Aura colors have a nice glow about them, but the way the color appears depends on your light. I think a blue could be nice if you get the right undertones, although blue is a hard color to get right.

The staff at the benjamin moore color station at white flint mall are helpful. they give color advice and sell big paint chips. Also, they have professional color consultants who give free 30 minute sessions 1-2 times per month. When I repainted my house I brought in all of my tile, cabinet, and countertop samples, and they helped me choose colors to go with them. |
We have a cranberry colored sofa in our livingroom painted BM's Chestertown Buff. The two colors look really good together, but you'd have to make sure it wouldn't clash or be too much gold with your rug and chair.
I don't know about the blue - it doesn't sound like it would tie into anything you have. I would do a neutral. Take a look at Limestone, which looks nice with reds and oranges.
