I am a current federal attorney looking for an agency that specifically prohibits attorneys from teleworking. I'm wondering what the trend is in other agencies. (Right now I am particularly interested in the smithsonian.) So if you are a fed attorney, please chime in and let me know if telework is or is not available to you.
option. TIA |
| Are you looking for a GS-13 position, or a more senior position with supervisory responsibilities? |
| Just wondering why anyone would seek this? Are you seeing a downside to teleworking? |
|
i am a federal attorney, and my agency permits telework. i work at the VA.
i am curious as to why you are seeking out a position that specifically prohibits telework. no judgment, just curious. |
| Are there entire agencies that prohibit teleworking? I think that it is going to be hard to find an office that prohibits it unless you have a position that involves reviewing documents, etc. that cannot be taken home for security reasons. Can't you just not telework? Why do you care if the agency prohibits it? |
| OPM has announced a new telework initiative -- it wants all federal agencies to have employees doing 20% of their work by telework (in other words, 1 day in 5) by 2015. I don't think you are going to be able to find a job that absolutely forbids telework. |
____________________________ I work at ICE as a paralegal. My Director totally forbids teleworking.

Somehow I suspect she meant "working for an agency that specifically prohibits attorneys from teleworking." |
I hope you are right! That would make much more sense. |

OP here. I made a typo in my original post that really confused the issue. I currently WORK at an agency that does not allow telework and am LOOKING for agency's that do.
I am aware of the OPM polciy in favor of telework, my Department's policy in favor of telework and even my specific sub-agency's policy in favor of telework. All of that means nothing when my management issues a directive saying that attorneys are ineligible. Reasons given were budgetary and security, both bogus. Thanks for your reponses. |
My agency really promotes telework (USPTO). I have a few friends whose agencies in the past (or at least their direct managers) really discouraged teleworking but within the last year their agencies have softened on it. One friend is at the SEC and for years wasn't allowed to telework but this year was given the green light to WAH 1 day a week. It's worked out really well and she was just told she could go to 2 days if she wanted. I think there is going to be pressure from OPM and highest levels of agency management to increase telework programs. Except for positions where it's not possible because of security issues, it really makes sense to encourage it. It's been extremely successful at my agency for everyone (employees and employer) and our agency feels that it saves big money on office space. |
| The way traffic is in this area, I can't see how the federal government can do anything but promote telework. It's only going to get worse unless we can get people to stay at home via telework. Same goes for private companies. |
| What kind of law do you practice? |
| Also a VA atty who teleworks 3-4 days a week. My friend at Treasury cannot telework - they cant even do compression/alternate work schedules. |
Strange, because my neighbor is a lawyer at Treasury and she teleworks one day/week. |
