Am I Crazy and other professional sagas

Anonymous
I had a coworker today say to me and several other colleagues today, “If I’m short with you please don’t take it personally. I don’t mean it” and then turned to me and said “this actually is really directed mostly to you since I’ve been the most short with you but don’t take it personally.” But if you’re not equally spreading the shortness then it IS personal, right? Or am I the crazy one? Sigh. I just don’t understand people. Maybe just don’t be short at all to anyone and just be professional.

your co-worker is nuts. Thank heavens it isn't your boss and just let the co-worker show others they are crazy. They noticed.

Could just mean they work more with you or sit closer or interact at the time of day they are most cranky.

No. It was me and three other colleagues and this person works with us all pretty equally.

They were trying to apologize but did it terribly.

This. I took it to mean that it's just statistics or something about you really triggers them (not your fault) and they recognize it.

That person is incredibly unprofessional. End of story.

I would start to suspect that they're on the spectrum, OP. Which is not a ding on them... I would start to observe them more carefully to see how I can handle working with them smoothly going forward.

I would not be offended, if that's what you're asking. They're clearly not abiding by usual norms of etiquette, and that's how it is. Bottom line - I still need to work with this person.
