… a slave-holding state and therefore DC can demand their return?
Looking for legal / history scholars to weigh in. I heard someone say this and I didn’t know what to think. |
| Nobody knows what you are talking about so suggest a link |
Not OP but some MAGA wrote an op-ed suggesting Trump can executive order Arlington back to DC from Virginia to fix the gerrymandering race they’re about to lose. I will try to find it. |
Exactly this. If Arlington and Alexandria can be returned to DC, that would have a big impact on NoVA influence on VA. Interesting that those areas were not returned to DC after the Civil War. (FWIW You can find some of the old boundary marker still around eg,, near Falls Church). Separately, I wonder if it would be beneficial for DC’s push for statehood. |
I did not see the op-Ed. Only heard someone talking about it. I thought interesting. |

lol all the local GOP politicos live in Arlington and Alexandria because they hate DC government (and black people in general)
Literally will screw everyone who works for Trump - their state income/capital gains taxes will nearly double overnight, stricter gun regs, ruled by Bowser et al |
Lolol. Then they can get ready for people to move out. No chance the citizens want to be in DC. . |
| No. We should be doing away with DC altogether and returning the east to Maryland |
| Give them back to make dc and Virginia better |
| The answer is no…it doesn’t have legs. |
| Interesting, we hear these things and they often sound like things that would never happen, but you really never know whether Trump and his minions will seize on these ideas. |

No, it doesn’t have legs. But I would not be surprised if the GOP pushed it anyway. And if the Supreme Court found some completely made up reason to push it through. That’s how little faith I have in the courts these days. For such avowed “originalists” the rightists on the Supreme Court have such a weak grass of actual history and such a strong sense “if my guys want to do it God must have blessed it.”
And I say this as both a lawyer and a historian. When you lose me, you lost the normal folks a long time ago. |
